Any entomologists on board?

I found this unidentified flying organism and I'm looking for its name:

No idea!!! But it looks like a weird hybrid of a bee and a cockroach.

Blimey I should know this one. I will see if any of the terrestrial bug guys at work know, I am intrigued now!

Would be useful to know where you found it? Near your water butt? In a cow field? On your window sill?..

Looks very wasp like, doesn't it? Creepy looking bugger, though. I have decided to call it the Lesser Spotted Slightly Furry Fish Tailed Wasp.
I took my dog to play frisbee. She was useless. I think I need a flatter dog.

I found it in the car, already dead. Especially the abdomen caught my attention.. the strange overlapping is something I have never seen before in a bee.

@citizentwiglet - I don't think it's a wasp, I think it is a bee.

@all others: thanks for trying :wink:

I reckon I can get you halfway there now. I'm almost certain that it's a Meliponine - a stingless bee. But I can't get any further on the varietal name.

LOL, were you looking at 'What's That Bug' website, too Mike? I got as far as Meliponine too.....I meant to come on and retract my 'looks like a wasp' comment, but my internet connection collapsed.

Nope :iconbiggrin:

I got creative and Googled "Caribbean bees". I ended up with a photo of a bee, but from the top rather than the bottom. Even so, it looked awfully similar.

Wonderful thing, Google.

Well, the best photo I could find was actually from Wikipedia (it must be good for something sometimes).

Here you go ...
