Quit my job

Post: # 186959Post flyonthewall »

Had enough of corporate life! I have been suffering from stress for months now, and finally I quit. It's scary, but good.

I have a place at uni to study youth work and community development in September, and am working 2 hours a week setting up a drop in centre at the moment. I have to work my notice in my current job, but the Youth Service have said that they might have more hours for me. I am also looking to set myself up doing freelance transcribing, typing and translation working from home, and doing a bit of dog walking!

I've been earning a good salary for a few years but am totally miserable, time for that to change even if it doesn't mean as much money.

Good luck flyonthewall.

I hung up my grey suit over three years ago - and have never looked back.

Good for you - how liberating is it? We did similar, to move up here. Income dropped by 2/3s but our expenditure probably dropped even more than that. No need for retail therapy any more.

You have to think laterally - you see their slimey trails in the garden, heading resolutely towards your seedlings, you put down those crushed egg shells or nut shells, and you go back to check and find - seedlings intact, trails heading away to the hedgerow  = happy happy happy thoughts.

Bloody good for you!!

My hubby works in a huge company - he's a systems tech, so not desk bound & he enjoys his job..... however.....

Last Friday, his work partner had a heart attack - has had 2 stents fitted.... he is 4 years younger than hubby....

Yesterday, one of the guys on the alternate shift had 3 heart attacks - needed the defibrillator in the ambulance & is in intensive care - he is 31.... so 18 years younger than hubby.....

Today, a new guy who was due to start working there this morning was getting shaved for his first day.... and had a heart attack.... also in intensive care & they aren't sure if he's going to make it..... at 41, he's 8 years younger than hubby.....

Andy quit smoking at lunchtime, cold turkey. To say that he's feeling vulnerable at the moment is an understatement... as they say, life's too short - grasp your chance while you can.

good for you :thumbright: - was work related stress that caused my stroke - so i got out the hard way - but despite all that's happened since - in a way its been worth it

at the end of the day who cares now ? - who comes to see me ? who even remembers my name ?? or what i did ??

no one - thats who :angryfire: - so why worry - we are all EXPENDABLE in the work place , there's always another sucker wanting the job

enjoy your freedom

Good for you, a brave move :flower: . I had seven years of decentish pay working alone in a windowless dungeon of an office (mostly there was no one else even working on the same floor). Finally took the plunge last March and quit. You could say I saw the light

First of all, to Julie's post. That's scary.

Right 2nd, good luck FOTW (sounds rude, but was supposed to save me typing fly on the wall!).

I still wash my husband's corporate work shirts but these days they've been dyed to a more suitable colour for digging veggie patchs than pale pink, white or pale blue. Haven't found a use for the old suits though but they come in handy once every 10 years or so (wedding invitations  ).

I am constantly amazed how much less we can live on even taking out the mortgage/rent payments that we used to have, and hubby is so chilled out and happy these days.

All the best for the future.

Quick update.... the 'new' guy at Andy's work passed away in the night after further heart failure in the hospital.... number 2 guy has also had stent/s inserted during the night & number 1 guy is doing well.

The company are bringing in 2 full time folks to set up in their own office & will be there to counsel for smoking/drinking/healthy eating issues - they start on Monday morning, so how quick was that to set up!?

A general staff meeting was called at 8am this morning before the shift start & all workers will be encouraged to go & get an 'MOT' from their docs.... all financial expenses will be compensated by the company.... the 'full irish' breakfast is to be dropped from the canteen menu, as will be chips & the cake selection. Their canteen is actually very healthy apart from these items - but basic fruit will be available on the counter free of charge.

Now..... the next time I start ranting about folks working for large companies only being numbers, I shall remember this week - what stars they are - how odd!!

Here's to a brighter future FOTW :occasion5: I didn't go back to work after my youngest was born, so that was a big dip in our income. Then OH suffered health problems and went part-time. We feel happier and healthier than we ever had before, and OH was even saying last night that he couldn't care less about money and that bartar is a far better system.

Julie, what a horrible time your husband and his colleagues must be going through. And how wonderful is that company to take action so fast?

I find crushed snail shells work quite well :evil4:
