What are you sowing right now?

Post: # 185817Post growingthings »

I guess this question is more for those of us on the northern hemisphere

I have some broad beans soaking - waiting to be planted, and I'm hoping to get some lettuce on the go soon, I'm busy sifting the compost that my wormery made last year and then I should be well away.

I'm keeping the seedlings indoors, as I don't have a greenhouse heated or otherwise, more a glorified cloche that's 6ft tall!  and it needs a bit of work to get it weather tight again.

So people what are you sowing now, can you make me any must have early recommendations? I'm always up for trying something new

I am just about to pop a few chilli seeds on a damp paper towel to germinate and put some garden peas in water to plant in the Polytunnel tomorrow.

I need to get some sowing compost tomorrow and then I can get some other goodies planted on window ledges in the next week or so.... maybe a few tomatoes, some peppers and chillis and aubergines.... perhaps.

i have 6 varieties of chillis going in soonish ( this week!) and several types of beans as well as peas. having them indoors on the window ledges till it gets a little warmer.

also have a batch of lettuce growing on the window ledge.

my little one loves peas straight from the pod, i was surprised i had any left meals! so this year im going to get him to grow his own. so much so i have brought him a pot thats going to get decorates by him to grow them in.

started this early last year with all my beans and peas and i was glad i did tbh!

also planning the best route to go with pumpkins and squashes. i left it a bit late last year

got mushrooms too

must go check what else im growing, i did have a list somewhere....

Aww I;m southern hemisphere but I just started this huge project to make part of my garden purple. I have a chocolate vine and Queensland raspberry seeds coming in as well as... peter pepper! Yes, I got male bit shaped peppers. I thought it would be entertaining. I also got huckleberry seeds and both black and white mulberry seeds.

I bought a snowmobile two weeks ago on an auction.
it was way to fast. Today I finished gearing it down.
it use to go 60 MPH at 6000 RPM
now it goes 40 MPH at 6000 RPM
top end was around 75 MPH
now it's about 50 MPH
the "out of the hole" torque has increased tremendously !
My plan is to use this machine to groom cross country ski trails.

Little gems for planting out early under a cloche (to give a headstart on slugs more than anything)

Mixed hot chilli's

broad beans/early peas inside this week

Some flowers - penstemon, ecchnacia (sp?), delphs and verbena

Discovered a box of leftover seeds from last 2 years, so will probably germinate most on kitchen paper to see which have had it and which are stile viable.

I've managed to be quite organised for this year   and put everything I wanted to plant into boxes for each month.

My January stuff is in now, which is good because it's now February   .

My stuff for February includes Chilli Peppers, cucumbers, asparagus, purple basil. thyme, gardeners delight tomatoes and globe artichoke for veg. I'll also be doing flowers aswell this year altough I've got very little room so I'll probably Freecycle alot this year or give to neighbours friends and family.

Same as you Susie - I have found from experience that it's much better to wait and sow everything at the beginning of May outside in cold frames where they get all the light they need and they are much healthier hardier plants than anything grown indoors which are just spindly pathetic things. The later sown outdoor ones very quickly catch up with anything sown inside and produce quicker too as they are heathier plants.

So apart from getting a few things into the ground like spuds I'll be going on holiday in April and then starting my gardening properly in May.

Phew, glad to hear not everyone is so on top of things. This will be my first year of growing veggies in a while, that is assuming I can get the house sorted [get the builders out] and the garden cleared and raise beds put in in time ! :?

Does anyone have any favourite sites that give advice on "what to do when" ? I am taking a nite off from DIY to curl up with a couple of garden library books and see what I can plant later in the spring.

I also agree with Susiegee and mmm, although I tend to get going in March for tomatoes, peppers, and chillies that are going to be raised in the polytunnel. The only things I'd sow indoors before then are sweet pea, onions, and perhaps some winter lettuce. Outdoors there's peas and broad beans.

It was snowing this morning. Just right for not planting anything. Mind I remember planting onion sets last year in a sleet storm on March 4th. They grew find.

The ground is solid and I have no heated greenhouse. So I'm growing patience at the moment.
