first signs of spring....maybe?

Post: # 185111Post crowsashes »

i know its still january! but ive been out in the garden all week. cold but dry. clearing all the dead grass and pulling weeds, also picked the new dandelion growth to go in a tasty salad.

took forever to cut back a dead shrub! and pull the weeds from between the path but there it was ,my primroses have started to grow and my blue bells are sticking there heads up through the dirt!

it has really lifted my mood, seeing those new green leaves starting to grow! cant wait as last year my garden was covered with them! i had soo many i even had a few bunches in the house

oh and it also means the woods will be covered in ramsons and bluebells soon, i cant wait

ill get my camera ready

Yeah, we have a wee Primrose in our front garden almost flowering, I told my Mom last week on the phone... her reply was "hmn" lol

It's certainly a tad warmer than the -6 we had on one of our first days here, that's for sure and the sun is really warm here but it still remains a biit nippy in the shade or at night... not long now though :)

I felt like that a few days ago Crowsashes when wandering around outside on a (rare!) sunny day. Primroses in flower, bluebell leaves up, snowdrop buds almost open, faint pink colour coming from the Japonica due to flower buds.

But now it's minus 3 again and it doesn't feel quite so springlike!

We have -8 Celcius this morning. Brrrr... I'm sure spring will come and I know it can suddenly 'spring', but for now it's cold :(

I thought it was spring at the weekend, but now it's -2C again this morning and they've forecast snow for Friday :(

I found two snowdrops in the back garden on Sunday and was so excited I screamed

It's not much and it's still soooooooooooo cold but for me it was the first sign that spring is coming and I can't WAIT to see some colour in the garden after so much white stuff!

snowdrops are the one thing i dont have in my garden! i must sort some for next year, daffodils either.... ok theres the list started for autumn!

it has been getting warmer here ( well i think it is anyway) and havent need the central heating on for the past two days ( just the main fire in the living room ) as the upstairs temperature has been constant.

anyhows it means i can work in the garden again as i have another lovely sunny day  i think i will have 2 raised beds built by the end of the week  and i should have all that garden waste burnt. then i can, once the beds are built start filling it with a combination of the garden waste i had in black sacks that has actually composted really well  it was ment to go to the tip as i had soo much of it last summer and not enough space for another heap. last years spent compost and some freecycled top soil are all going in. i love this time of year as it useally means things get done!

now my mini green house needs the plastic cover repairing! any ideas? and will duct tape or something similar work? its just torn in the bad weather.

I know, daft, eh? But after looking out the window on a white and grey world for the last few weeks that little promise of spring is priceless :flower:

Daffs next, then the tulips

I spent today helping friends move house - and there in the garden of their new place were green spikey shoots - corcuses or something - it was really nice to see.

now don't you folks go getting too enthusiastic - my old bones and gut feelings tell me there's more bad weather to come - nothing scientific - but methinks this may be a false dawn - and that Feb could have a sting in its tail for some parts - even down here in the ( real ) south west

sorry to be negative with this - but one snowdrop or the odd green sprout does not spring make - if nothing else suggest frost precautions be taken if gardening

hummmmm

( of course i may have this totally wrong and be talking bolides  )
