We're back!!

Post: # 184017Post StripyPixieSocks »

Well, we're finally here in Cornwall and phew, what a time we had getting here.

First of all our removals company tried to rip us off by leaving half of our stuff in the flat in London and then trying to negotiate another £1300 from us to get the rest. Basically they broke the contract, left us with no pots and pans, things to eat off, no chairs and no bed for a week. Then he started screening our calls so we had to get my MIL to phone and he moaned about it and told her it was going to be expensive for him to go round and give us another quote and he wanted it up front. We told him to piddle off, borrowed £500 from my Dad and Pat hired a van and with alot of help got the rest of the stuff here... we're just waiting to take the removals company to court to sue the living daylights out of him.

Not only that but they sent one guy down here with the stuff (which is breaking Health and Safety regulations) and when we opened the back the stuff was everywhere as these idiots obviously hadn't heard of cargo nets. So if you ever come across 'Move Me Easy' (obviously the name is ironic) avoid them at all costs because they are robbing scum who made our life hell for 4 days.

Then on the way down 12 miles outside of Truro our car blew a head gasket and we had to be relayed to the new place... it's going to be a PITA to fix and probably expensive so by the time we got here I was in tears and Pat was fuming and piddled off.

We got an average nights sleep on the blow up bed which the next day got a puncture in it so we had to sleep on the floor but then we went downstairs and looked out of the kitchen window and everything melted away and the cries of 'we've made a really huge mistake moving here' died away in the blissful quietness of Carnyorth village.

It's beautiful here, the people are amazingly friendly, the cottage is beyond wonderful (despite it's rough edges here and there) and we've stopped seeing it as a temporary stop-gap until we find a place with a garden and we have decided to stay here for... well... as long as the landlord lets us I guess lol.

Here's a couple of photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/skyblue197 ... 21/detail/

We haven't had much time to take many photos as there's alot of unpacking and slacking off on the sofa in front of the fire to be done. After 7pm you could hear a pin drop and the most exciting thing that has happened in the village this week was a bus and a lorry trying to get around the bend at the same time in opposite directions and getting stuck!

Makes a change from robberies, stabbings and SWAT teams blocking off your road at 2am to raid drug dens any day!

The landlord has given us permission to turn the front garden into a herb garden... basically we can do what we like as long as it doesn't turn into a jungle again like the last tenants left it :) The landlord by the way is a really nice, jolly Cornish-man as we met him a few days ago when he came to put some bits back into the cooker that's here!

So, apart from all the aggro, we're here, we love it and it can only get better from here on in

Wow.....looks gorgeous, you lucky thing.

I second the allotment list, but what about that big expanse of grass outside the window? Surely with some windbreaks it is just begging to be cultivated?

Congratulations, it sounds like you have made the right decision there.

Ther are lots of words I could use but Blessed will do, small towns in New Zealand lack such charming feel.

I have a feeling you will be very happy there. :hugish:
Our remote ancestors said to their mother Earth, "We are yours."
Modern humanity has said to Nature, "You are mine."
The Green Man has returned as the living face of the whole earth so that through his mouth we may say to the universe, "We are one."

There's a difference between having a place to live in and having a home. Welcome home. :sunny:

Hee hee thanks, we feel better here mentally and physically already which is great especially for Pat as the sea air will be a boost for his lungs away from the pollution of the city.

Yep, we're already on the lookout for an allotment although we're trying to find out who the field behind us belongs to and we may ask him if we could rent a piece of it as I think so far it is just pasture.

We've already found our very local butcher who has his own Soil Association approved slaughter house and only has animals from the local area and only sells organic produce along with local cheeses and there's a lovely yarn / quilting shop in the next village which is about 15 minuted walk away so we're sorted lol

Pat is particularly happy to have spotted some bee hives on the way back from Penzance so I think local mead may be on the to-do list! If we get some land at the back of the house we might even keep some bees, I know Pat is interested in it.

The weather is looking favourable now as well, we drove to Pats parents in the freezing fog and ice because the removals didn't turn up until 7:30pm (should have been 1pm) :angryfire: There was still a bit of snow on the ground when we got here and a -6 temperature on one night then we had a terrifying howling storm one night but we just figured if we could be happy in the bad weather summer is going to be fab!!

Even the relay guy gave us a guided tour while he was driving us to the house and pointed out a brilliant garage that he recommends for getting the car fixed which was nice of him! He also pointed out all the supermarkets, B&Q and told us that the sat nav lied a bit on the back streets as it tends to send you down farm tracks and such HAHA. Although... there is one 'road' down here that is literally a dirt track  and I mean a well used road which made us laugh.

So, yeah, it's nice to have a HOME instead of a pokey little flat in the city, we've only been here for just under two weeks and it already feels like we've lived nowhere else!

We're off to St Ives tomorrow... it still feels like a holiday to me but it just shows what you can do if you want it enough... I've only wanted to live here for 24 years!

I'm so pleased for you! Sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for.

The house looks great - the view is wonderful, and I would definitely have fallen in love with the fireplace too.

About 10 years ago I moved to a completely new (to me!) region of the UK. I'd just come out of a painful and emotional break-up, and wanted to go somewhere to heal. I found the perfect place, and every day that I lived there (about 18 months in all) felt like a holiday. And compared with what had gone before, I think it *was* a holiday. So enjoy it! You've worked hard for this, and taken a big leap of faith.

Looking forward to hearing more of your new life.

Try the fish and chips at Lil's in Trewellard, and go and eat them down by the lighthouse while the sun goes down!
We know the area from holidays there, and I do congratulate you on your new home - much happiness to you.
