Do you want a separate pet section?

Poll ended at Thu Nov 12, 2009 6:44 am

Yes a separate pet section would be great. I want a clear separation between pets and livestock

No, pets and livestock should be in the same section, the line between the two is too blurry

Do you want a separate pet section?

Post: # 175599Post Millymollymandy »

We have plenty of threads about pets but no separate section for them and it's not very clear whether questions or discussions about pets should go in Livestock or in the Ish Local chat area.

So we'd like your input as to whether you'd like a separate section for pets. Having said that it can be a bit blurry where the lines are drawn (i.e. pet chickens!) so we would still ask that questions relating to pets which are also livestock (poultry, sheep, pigs, goats etc) are put in the livestock section, as you are more likely to get a better response that way.

But if you would like somewhere where you can show off photos of your pet iguana, ask questions about your guinea pigs, talk about your cats and dogs and hamsters and boa constrictors, then please say so!

I'm the third no vote - I can just imagine the confusion over working dogs and initially pot-bound chickens who end up with names like Myrtle. Why not just change the section heading to Animals? It's always obvious if an individual posting is about livestock or pets, so no problem.

Now Mike.... I actually voted yes, but then I thought... where would I post about my ednas if I needed to??
See.... all christmas turkeys are called Edna... it's a fact.... doesn't matter if they are male or femaile, if they are for christmas eating (or easter, or just because we feel like it) then they are called Edna.

They follow me around the garden relentlessly..... if I run, they run to keep up! I chat away to them for hours.... they quite often wander into the kitchen & have all had a cuddle & been shown the oven...... they stand outside the kitchen door eating my sage plant (cuts out the middle man, I guess!) and they get all the best scraps because every time I turn around, there they are!
The bassets love them, the kitten tries to play with them, (looks funny seeing a 10 week old kitty being dragged along the ground whilst holding the turkey tail feathers in her mouth!! ) little Leah keeps telling them how tasty they will be......
Oh, I'm going to miss my little pets... but I have some lovely pics... and come christmas day we shall be thankful that they ended up with us... and to be sure, we'll do it all again next year!!

Of course pets should be separate from livestock

That's like asking if kids should be separate from livestock

that being the case then we would have to be very strict that no one inadvertantly spoke about livestock in the pet section. So Julie's turkeys would have to stay out of the pet section

@Mamos ...

Here's a plan.....

Until mid december, I chat about the ednas in the pet section.....
From mid -december, I chat about them in the livestock section......
From chrimbo day, I chat about them in the what's cooking section......

Poor Ednas... I wonder if their ears are burning yet, with all this chat about them!! (As long as that's ALL that gets burnt on them! )

Errr....... Mike, I'm not sure!! Except we already have a chook called Enid, so we couldn't use that name.....

We name just about everything in the house for the benefit of the granddaughter Leah, mainly!
The large wooden cat ornament is 'Arthur', the stanley stove is, of course Stanley (but never 'THE' stanley) all robins are Gerald..... then the garden ornaments have names - Samuel Squirrel, Freddy Frog, Irvin Scarecrow..... I think it's all part & parcel of keeping things fun & light-hearted around the place.
Then Leah names the chooks - so the guinea fowls are 'Steve & Gertrude'...... Our 2 rooster boys are Romeo & Frank...... the twin green legs are Jenny & Penny.....

Of course, I might just be using Leah as an excuse & it might just be that I'm a little 'odd'...... :dontknow:

Oh dear we don't even have a grandchild to blame naming things on.....

All our wildlife gets names - there's Kevin the coypu and Malcolm the muskrat, the moorhens (don't have any at the moment :( ) are collectively called 'The Millies' because the first year there was Milly, Molly, Mandy, Mork and Mindy, all the swallowtail caterpillars are called Sammie, and all big house spiders are either Billy or Bobby. All garden birds are Robbie, Bluey, Greenie, Blackie etc.
