Internet Addiction

Post: # 173267Post Andy Hamilton »

Due to some of my community work I have come into contact with addicts both reformed and not. I sometimes think about my responsibility as the person who started this site and it does concern me at times that people get a addicted, perhaps not just to this site but to the internet as a whole.

There is a little test to take, if you are worried, indeed if you are worried about someone else and their usage it might also be useful to take this test as if you are them. You might be more truthful than they are. If you do take the test as someone else do be aware that the change has to come from them but there are support groups out there.

well apparantly I'm fine.
funny that 'never' isn't one of the options... the nearest you can get to never is 'rarely'

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

What really concerns me at the moment are all these social networking sites Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, WRYN etc. They seem to be taking over many peoples lives.

Is it just me or does anyone else struggle to see the fascination? Why would you want to tell people what you are doing every hour of the day? And who the hell cares enough to "follow" you? Are their lives that dull that they must create another reality?? I really, really don't get it. :banghead:

i dunno - i spose its horses for courses. I really dislike facebook - mostly for security issues, but also because of the compulsion.. you know the sort of thing.. my bro puts pictures of his kids in facebook. apparantly its my fault if i cant see them... or if there is any kind of campaign against something.. there will be a fb page for that... or people link to something.. in fb.. assuming everyone else can see it...

the thing that concerns me about twitter, is that people can do it from their phones.. so... they never get away from it (ok i realise some ppl twitter from their pc.. so that is different). its raining today, I'm doing HE with my son, and trying to catch up with paperwork, so i can poke my nose in forums etc.. but i am not here all day if its nice.. or its the weekend.. i sort of flinch at the notion that people want to carry on posting even while away from the pc. I dont even have a laptop.. I like to keep my pc in one corner of one of the bedrooms in our house, and i leave it there, and although I do have a mobile phone.. its one of those old fashioned ones that make phone calls and little else. but thats just me.

I do blog though.. but that is sitting down and spending 1/4-1/2 an hour writing. and I enjoy writing - it is a hobby of mine. Other people watch tv.

No me neither, especially the twitter rubbish. Who cares what Stephen Fry or anyone else had for dinner? :dontknow: And shops like M&S now have twitter accounts. What for??????? :dontknow:

I feel really sorry for people like my mum (who knows nothing about computers) watching TV and wondering what on earth they mean when they keep saying things like 'do you twitter?'.

Thing is, I know I'm spending far more time online at the moment, but that's because my normal activities are on hold till we've moved. So I ansered honestly & got 24/average.

I particularly liked the 'do you neglect housework for the pc?' one...Nope, I neglect housework FULL STOP

Perhaps Twatter.com is more appropriate! For some reason (probably my Hunter Gatherer side) when people say 'you can tweet me' I automatically translate that to 'yes I would like to twat you'. What a sheer waste of time and energy, we will all end up in the nut house if we are not careful.

Ms Average here too, i got 35. That surprises me, i thought i was well on my way to internet addiction!

I think that if i was scoring myself based on my previous job, i would have got a higher score because the internet was there in front of me, and boredom drove me to it, whereas now, i onoly work 6 hours a day at the most and there's no internet in the classrooms, so i'm not tempted to stray onto it.
