Are there any actual Scots, Irish or Welsh on this forum?

Post: # 168138Post Millymollymandy »

Apart from Annpan of course.

I've been pondering this for a while, as I know for sure we've got British in France, French and English in the Irish Republic, English in Germany and a German and an Aussie in Scotland. I think we have an Irish in Canada (Martina?) an American in Australia and I think a German and an American plus more English in New Zealand.

So apart from Annpan (Scottish), Nev (Australian) and Jandra and Berti (Dutch) in the Netherlands (and Jandra's about to move to Germany ) ...........

Are there any natives out there?

Oh and don't answer all you English in England! :toothy7:

Dear MMM,

I shan't show your posting to my lady. The sight of a balmaiden waving St Pirans' Cross in anger at not being counted in with the other Celtic Nations can be a disturbing sight. The 2011 census in Britain will probably be carrying an ethnic identity (Cornish) tick box: there is even talk of printing some of the forms in Cornish - supposedly dead since the end of the Victorian era, but spoken by a few still.

So, if your fate is to have your ship wrecked before being forced to eat your body weight in saffron bun, prior to being tipped down the 500 fathom shaft of the Wheal Jane tin mine, it won't be because I informed on you ....

Love and Peace

Are there indeed! It depends what you mean, I suppose. Having recently done my family tree properly, I find that I could have played a few games in my youth for England, Scotland or Wales. What does that make me? - there's a particularly strong Norfolk element too, so I have to stop taking the p*ss out of people with straw in their ears. Oh, there was Great-Granny from Basingstoke, too, but I don't really know what to do with her.

Basically, I'm British through and through.

Aye, am Scots awright... it's a braw bicht moonlicht nicht.

I think that maybe.. you are a native of the accent you have... I have friends whose parents are Chinese or Indian but these friends speak with Scottish accents so they are Scottish. Likewise my Mum's husband has lived in Scotland for 35 years but he has an English accent, so I consider him English... his son has a scottish accent, I consider him Scottish.

Right, so so far I only know as much as I knew anyway, that Annpan's Scottish.

I agree about the accents. I find it very strange the amount of people I meet who are 'Cornish' yet speak with posh or estuary English accents!

And don't disregard the "forgotten" Celts in Breton and Asturias! The best St Patrick's Day I've ever had was in a bar in Asturias - Guinness, Folk music, funny green hats, etc, etc.

I have no idea where I should truly live - I've discovered I have English, French, Scottish and Polish ancestry, and that's just a starter with my grandparents. Perhaps that's why we love wandering about so much - we just arrived back in the UK from France (via Spain) for a few days today so we are a bit spaced out at the moment.

When my son spent two years at high school in the States he was bemused by all the insistence that he MUST surely know his exact ancestry - the other kids all realed off how many eights of various nationalities their ancestors represented. He just used to say he was English. His sister, on the other hand, made great play on her Polish Jewish ancestry and got on famously. As they were in the same grade together and were at that time a) noticeably English and b) obviously brother and sister I never did work out why. I suppose that's why my son couldn't wait to come "home" and she is still there!
Growing old is much better then the alternative!

100% pure Scottish beef! Fathers side traced back to the 1700's to a place called Ollaberry in Shetland (so maybe a smidgen of Viking!). Mother and grandmother Scottish although great grandmother from Ireland.

Surprisingly I tan very easily, for most Scots it takes a week of sunbathing to go white!
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Half Welsh, quarter Scottish and quarter German. Born and still living in England so count myself as English (unless I'm in Wales, Scotland or Germany of course!).
