Blackcurrants

Post: # 14826Post FluffyMuppet »

Ribena have a big promotion which is giving away blackcurrant cuttings (and some more boring things like festival tickets and a Mini Cooper  ).

It's a free prize draw, so you don't have to make a purchase to enter, you can just sent them a postcard - the address is listed in the 'no purchase necessary' section of the terms and conditions.

http://www.ribena.co.uk/95percent/

The site also has tips on growing blackcurrants and an email reminder system that will send you emails when it's time for pruning or whatever.

Only open to UK residents, I'm afraid

a blackcurrent - which sadly I'd be more excited about!!

Only problem is I know they grow fast and huge and we've only got a little flat.

Actually I won the other day, I must send it off. I was pretty excited and thought -wow what a perfect prize for me, read the back and saw that millions are being given away. - still I am pretty chuffed.

Damn, damn! I just bought a blackcurrant bush! :? The guides are fun. I might enter the competition though...can't have too many blackcurrant bushes! :)

Mine has just arrived. Apparently I have to keep 'him' in his jiffy bag and nice and cool until I can plant him out.

I have two spare winning labels (if I order any more bushes I will be running a blackcurrant plantation in a couple of years), so if anyone would like a cutting, PM me your proper name and address and I will send them off on your behalf.

They have obviously just pruned back the bushes this year as I got mine this morning. Can you plant it out with the risk of frost, does it not have to get a bit established first?

Planting info here.
A friend of mine once tried to grow redcurrants in South Africa without any success. Later, she was told that fruitbushes need a good frost to help them along.
