Re: dog walkers etiquette
Your big dog pee'd on the little dogs head???
Happened to me once, quite delightful from my point of view
I agree hun people can just lack so much sense.... i can control my 11 stone and 8 stone of mastiff beautifully but people see my control and feel it is a licence to release their's, it is a fine art, and 3 yapping terriers may just push the fine art into an excited frenzy
But lets face it we knew this when we decided to own big dogs, it's a hell of a responsibility, one that people who haven't handled a dog like that seriously underestimate
p.s. my 11stoner had one of his finest play sessions with a miniature yorkshire terrier i must admit it was hilarious and fabulous to watch, he was so careful with the little un, sometimes it can work

Re: dog walkers etiquette
I have a yappy Corgi. He's getting better but occasionally still decides to bark at dogs he doesn't know. I always try and stand waaaay back for good dogs walking past me, mainly because when my dog starts I get embarrassed

my jr bitch is like that vicki ,on the lead shes fine but off the lead she feels the need to "protect" me and the other jr by screaming in other dogs faces, it makes people very wary of us when out and about and they never bellieve the " shes friendly ....really!"

AAARRGHH its behind you!!!

I wouldn't mess with a JR even I was a big dog. I've seen what they do to rats.

Re: dog walkers etiquette
I have 2 large bouncy Boxers, weighing in at approx 5 and 6 stone each....
I used to say to people "oh, they're friendly, don't worry", but found as soon as I said it, they would do something that made them look distinctly UNfriendly (barking, snapping, hackles up, frothing at the mouth, boucing all over other dogs etc)
If we see another dog on lead, my 2 go on lead as well.
My 2 get quite stressed on lead in small spaces, so we always wait for other people at the end of footpaths etc (very narrow and often enclosed here). I would never barge past, or try and squeeze past another dog and owner on a footpath!
It's amazing how many people let their off lead dog come up to my two when they are on-lead, and they're miles away and saying "It's OK, s/he's friendly!", and I shout back, "But my 2 aren't!!".
We've had issues where off lead dogs have started a fight with my 2 on leads, who will back each other up every time, and I've had to forcibly remove the dog from a) the mouth of mine, b) my trouserleg/hand/arm, c) the area, usually with my boot....
And of course, because I have large bull breed dogs, it's mine who are always viscious and need muzzling and shouldn't be allowed out
OK, OK, I'm going to have a cup of tea and a lie down in a darkened room now.....

Re: dog walkers etiquette
Oh what a joy to see I'm not alone, I do LOVE this site!
My two are ex-racers, bred for 3000 years to kill small stuff, trained from birth to do so. I knew that when I adopted them & they are NEVER off lead outside of our garden.
We can no longer walk in our local Park as too many people just let their dogs off lead, at the gate and allow their dogs to dissapear from view despite the signs saying; 'Dogs are only permitted off lead if you are sure you have a well behaved animal that will respond IMEDIATLY to verbal commands. Dogs must be in clear sight of owners at all times'
If your dog is on lead & their's isn't and approches your dog they are in the wrong & you can sue for damages and vet's fees.
I really feel people should have to take a test, (similar to the driving test) and then hold a licence that proves their competance, before they can own a dog. Points could be added for letting them annoy other people or dogs, and not cleaning their mess!

The local council spent quite a bit of money putting in more red poo bins, only to have residents complain about having a bin full of dog poo outside their house... so they were removed. I'd rather have a red dog poo bin outside my house than a pavement covered in sh1t, or bags of poo hanging from nearby trees and fences.....

Re: dog walkers etiquette
Finlay gets nervous of other dogs, and he always has to be on a lead. Its amazing the amount of owners who let their off lead dogs run up to hijm while shouting 'They're friendly' at me! I have to pick Finlay up above their heads, otherwise he tangles me in the lead.

Re: dog walkers etiquette
To be fair the "bag it and hang it" approach is a protest (or was originally) about the amount of places who didn't provide poo bins (or didn't empty them till people complained that they were overflowing)Russian Doll wrote: oooh dont even get me started on the dog mess issue...round here people have two ideas...leave it on the floor or bag it up then drop your bag on the floor...quite stupid really as we have dog mess bins all the way down our river
One of my favourite dog walks only has a poo bin at the start of it, so if any of my dogs go after that I have nowhere to dispose of it till I get home and as I have 3 dogs, 2 of which will poo 4 or 5 times each over the course of the walk I find it ridiculous that I need to end the walk looking like I'm moving house with all the bags, all because there is only one very badly positioned poo bin. It's a nice long walk too, about an hour if you do the short track but up to about 3 hours if you go round the whole thing. So yes I will and do bag it and hang it (and I am not the only one as at one time a lot of the dog walkers there had an organised protest going). Mainly because all my attempts to get a poo bin put in or near the car park have been ignored. I figure it's making a protest without leaving it for someone to tread in. And that that is the only place I do that as all our other walks have appropriately positioned poo bins (although not all are emptied as often as they should be)
And just so you don't all hate me

Of course if their are bins provided then it is unaceptable... unless they are overflowing, in which case hang it on the bin!
Re: dog walkers etiquette
We have a similar problem wit our terrier x staffie - he really is most friendly with other dogs but will scream when he sees them especially when on lead so the owners drag them away terrified!!jampot wrote:my jr bitch is like that vicki ,on the lead shes fine but off the lead she feels the need to "protect" me and the other jr by screaming in other dogs faces, it makes people very wary of us when out and about and they never bellieve the " shes friendly ....really!"
He is a 15yo entire male and has a real "staffie" scream which he uses to everyone elses amusement (and our embarrassment) whenever he gets excited... we've had neighbours charging down the road with hammers thinking someone was being attacked before when all we were doing was setting out on a walk!!!

Re: dog walkers etiquette
Finlay's parents caught rabbits and rats on the farm (working farm) where he was born, so i particularly love the people with Yorkshire terriers, or Chihuahas who let them run up to him - i can see him thinking 'oooh...rat...must kill'.
I will point out that i do lift him up and tuck him under my arm (well, kinda wrap my arm round his middle and lift him up) so that he can't practice his killing techniques on the smaller dogs...
