celing airer

Post: # 143353Post barefootlinzi »

I would LOVE one of those old fashioned celing airers on a pulley, but we dont have high celings. Would it still work if i installed one in my kitchen?

i have one which came with the house, and another in a box which i bought at a jumble which we will take with us if/when we move.
i love it, it's invaluable. ours is in the spare room, near the kitchen.

My mum used to have on over the worktops in her utility room, I think I'll do the same when we get the house done.... I had one in our last place, over the bath (but I did have 15ft ceilings) and it was amazing.

we have normal height ceilings. the airer interferes a bit with the internel back room door but only if there's stuff on it; and we hardly ever close that door anyway.

Also known as a dutch airer I think? If drying clothes in the kitchen then expect them to absorb the smells from cooking. Less spring fresh more chicken vindaloo!

We had one in our kitchen in our childhood home. It was near the coal boiler. Mum never fried anything (she hadn't heard of curries!) so smells weren't a problem.

However one time Dad's home made red! wine squirted over all the white washing - including Dad's dinner shirt!

They're so useful, we had one in our old kitchen and I've got one ready to go up when we re-do the awful kitchen here.

My neighbour has a fantastic one, which they made themselves - it's like four dryers arranged in a square, round the stovepipe of the woodburner they have in the middle of their living room.

We used to have one ... I think it was called a "Lazy Susan" then but I have no idea why
In our kitchen over the Rayburn we have a retractable washing line which may be of use to you as you need only have it up when in use.
Ours has 4 strings about 6 inches apart and is across a 6' 0" alcove giving 24 feet of drying area.

Its called a Sheilamaid in our household....? (it cost £2-50 for the carboot!)

LOVE mine, its above the burner in the front room, I would rather have dry clothes than an immaculate house! I live in a cottage where you can reach the ceilings just by putting your hand up, so be sure that if your ceilings are low they are not anywhere near the traffic, or you'll come a cropper! Ours mirrors the hearth so fits really well.

It's called the 'maiden' here & is in our kitchen, over the table. We have quite high ceilings though, at 8' so we rarely bash ourselves on it. Occasionally stuff does smell of cooking, but it's better than resorting to going to the laundrette's dryer.

sheilamaid we call it,the lazy susan to us is the thing that sits in the middle of the table and twirls round with sauces etc on it,not that we use it for that,in our house its used for scrabble and other board games, turning it to the next player to read,
