found our neighbour last night

Post: # 139353Post missy »

about 9.50 last night heard some noise from next door (we're semi detached), muted the telly and heard someone shout help me, someone help me. knowing that we have elderly neighbours, went round with my husband and found our neighbour had died and his mentally ill younger brother (in his 60s) who he looked after, very distressed. the neighbour had been dead for a couple of hours.
husband was on the phone to ambulance and taking instructions to lay him on the floor, whilst trying to tell the operator that he was cold and definately gone. at the same time we were trying to calm the brother down. feel so sorry for the guy that's left.
used to be the older brother, him and a sister. the sister died 2 months ago. the younger brother hasn't left the house in the 5 years we've lived here. had police round until about 12.30 taking statements. younger brother has been taken to a care home.. poor guy. :pale:

Oh Missy, what an awful situation for him, and you must be so upset by it all too. I'm sorry, I can't find any words that will help, but I'm thinking of you and your neighbour.

A very distressing situation for all. Hopefully he'll be looked after well. Are you OK?

what worries us is that the other side of us is a lady who is 89 and she lives alone. her son visits at weekends, but the rest of the time she's alone.. only last week we were saying we hadn't seen her for a week, and then she spoke to my BIL (who lives with us) and said she'd falled on the front step and hurt her leg.

still weirded out by the whole experience, but glad that we were able to help. though i did feel slightly useless as i'm due to give birth tomorrow, so wasn't able to help move him or anything.
my husband was shaken by the whole experience and didn't sleep much last night, and then he's still gone to work today, despite me asking him to stay home and rest.

Good to be able to help - but it must be so upsetting for you Missy - you need to relax now and settle that baby down

Hopefully your other neighbour will have some sort of homecare as she's been injured, might be a plan to give her your phone number if you're worried about her - what I did with my elderly neighbour = although she never has phoned yet I'm happier knowing she could call us if she needed any help

I'll add a feeling of empathy Missy. My elderly neighbour died on Sunday morning. she was riddled with cancer and it was a matter of time but she had a massive stroke and when she collapsed her partner rang the emergency services and was told the same, put her in the recovery position so he ran for me to help. The paramedics were there quickly but it was decided not to resus. The reason he ran for my help was that we are all close in our grove. We look out for each other and if we don't see people we knock and say hello and ask if everything is ok. The sad thing is that we are all living insular lives and don't talk to our neighbours. We need to get an active voice going where we talk to our neighbours rather than just ignore them because we one day might need their help.

You did the right thing by helping, you could of course, just turned the telly up louder and I know some people who would do that.

Well done for helping where you could, Also to your hubby but now the important thing is you and your baby to be.

Keep safe,

Big Al

Dear Missy

I know by experience how traumatic it can be...... you did exactly the right thing. And isn't it one of the things we're about? Community! Well done!

thanks for the comments.

i always made sure i said hello if i saw him in the street. the police said the house would probably end up being sold to pay for the surviving brothers care. but atleast he's being looked after. they took him to a care home last night.

as for the lady next door, she does have our number and this isn't the first time she's hurt her leg. might ask her son for his number, incase we ever need to get in contact with him.

Well done for being there and caring - there are far too many people who don't bother these days.
You take care of your self and your baby now. :hugish: hugs to you - and let us know how you get on.
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
