hello from Scotland

Post: # 136036Post toady »

Hi

confined to my bed of sickness for day 4 of what is most definitely flu not a cold  I decided to seek out info on green funerals- and ended up here. Interesting site, with what seem like very knowledgeable folk, so thought would register. My new year's resolution is to 'consume less, consume wisely' and as I haven't eaten anything since Sunday, am doing ok on that score so far!!!

seriously, I look forward to learning lots and hopefully contributing as well.

Anne

Hello and welcome Anne.

Hope you won't be needing the green funeral just yet  and that you're now on the mend.

Whereabouts in Scotland are you?

Hi Maggie

I hope not to need the green funeral info just yet either!!! This flu seems to last forever... :(

am in Renfrewshire, about 4 miles away from Glasgow Airport. Eventually I'd like to sell up and buy a smallholding somewhere, but that won't happen for a little while yet, until eldest is through uni and youngest has moved out. So just now is the time to learn and prepare

I like the idea of a green funeral - here in Ireland there are loads of burial sites just in fields - graves are marked with large white stones as unconsecrated graves.....

My plans are to be cremated in an eco-pod or similar & then have my ashes dug in a small plot where our pets are resting - we've no plans to sell & the property is to be passed to the granddaughter, so we should be here on the land for a good few years..... but hopefully the funeral plans won't be needed just yet!!

Hope you're feeling well soon - and welcome to Ish

You can be buried in your own back garden you know, something I found out whilst researching our book. As long as you own the land and only 2 people can be buried, it has to go on the deeds and you have to inform the council. The funny thing I found about green funerals is that they are much cheaper than conventional. You can have all in for about £700, gets cheaper if you are prepared to dig the grave (obviously not your own).

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Aha! Andy, here in Ireland, it's common practice for friends & relatives to dig the grave....most people already have their 'plot' sorted out, so when they go, everyone gets into gear, quickly!
Usually when someone dies they are laid out & get visited by EVERYBODY who's anybody.... the villages are gridlocked when a body is lying at rest..... and the funeral is normally within 48 hours. Quite civilized because it's all over & done with after 2 to 3 days. & not dragged out over 2 or 3 weeks like in the UK.

Cheerful topic, huh.....

Same in Scotland... or at least for Catholics it is usually not more than a week before the funeral, more often 3 or 4 days (we tend not to dig the grave though)

Welcome to ish Anne

Hello Anne, and welcome from another Scot (by choice, not birth)...

Hope your flu gets better soon - I've had it, too, and it seems to be a particularly nasty big this year, lasted much longer than usual!
