Guess who is back.... Guess who has moved......

Post: # 129369Post JulieSherris »

That's right - Me!

Well, we finally moved house 4 weeks ago - and boy, has it been hectic!

The first week was spent moving, cleaning, cleaning & moving...... The house we moved from was clean, the house we bought was NOT! Severely not - oh, joys!
Our first problem was waiting 5 days for the previous owners to vacate..... and he wanted us to give him an extra 2 weeks, because he wouldn't have had internet access at their new place! Needless to say, we didn't allow the extra 2 weeks!

The next problem? Well, stupid as we were, we never got a structural survey - it's ok, the building's fine - shame we didn't have any water flowing through the hot taps - not anywhere!
So hubby had to play with the pump, boiler, pipes, etc etc..... and 4 days later, voila!!
I met the neighbours.... our latest Basset acquisition who has now been moved on decided that he was a prize Turkey chaser..... so while I ran around the field, leash in hand, the neighbour was doing the same with a broom! We've made peace though, & no turkeys were harmed...although we've been promised one for xmas dinner (I bet we get the one with the bite marks on its legs!)

Anyway, it turns out that the family didn't have running hot water here for the last 3 years....... GULP! With 2 kids as well - How??
The sad thing is that hubby didn't have to spend a penny to get it sorted - he just poked, prodded, jiggled & spannered about a bit - ok, I have no idea exactly WHAT he did, but I know he got it working!!

Next came learning how to use a Stanley Range..... I'm a townie from the Uk, what did I know about using a range? haha! I DO now! It heats our radiators & the hot tank & is really efficient - I am now in love with Stan & when we eventually have the kitchen/diner renewed, I want a brand new one!
Hubby stripped it down completely...... we needed a new firebar frame & bars, new rope seals, a section of door was strategically placed.... but fell out every time we opened it..... now is repaired using fire cement, seals & such.... hubby looked like a chimney sweep after cleaning it - I don't think it had been cleaned for, blimey, dunno. It's been burning twigs - not logs, but twigs but for the last few years, but was totally clogged with them.
We now have it running 24/7 as per the manual which I found online - and have a trailer load of peat turfs to burn.... if anything, it's getting TOO hot in the house!

I used my leccy kettle last wednesday.... and since then have used the range kettle - SO nice not to be switching the leccy on for coffee anymore!
I've cooked casseroles on Stan, & earlier today I even managed the sunday roast on it - altho I did burn the yorkie puds... oops!!

The guy who delivered our peat turfs had to make 2 visits - the first time he couldn't get his tractor down the drive - too many trees! So, the lads next door came along with a chainsaw & cleared a path..... the tractor came back the following day - good job hubby was here, because the ground was so wet, the tractor wheels had to be dug out!!
We now have to make a 'runway' to the hayshed for future tractor visits......

I bought hubby his own chainsaw & he's spent 7 hours today chopping down every thing in sight just about!!
It's bit sad, because the trees are lovely - but to be honest, with so many trees around, the ground is absolutley waterlogged.... not to mention the amount of leaves! Our gardens are bordered on 2 sides by 35 acres of forest, so it's not as though we are treeless anyway... the previous owners liked to dig up saplings & plant them in the garden - don't even mention the amount of ferns he's planted everywhere!!
We have fruit trees by the hayshed too - but they hadn't done much this year - because they didn't get a lot of light & all are leaning out to try & get some. Apart from trees, there's not a lot else growing with any conviction & it's been so dark in the garden I have to look over to the field next door to see if it's sunny, but not for much longer!

So now we have logs to cut..... many, many logs to cut!! And after the garden has been cleared, it will be full steam ahead to plan & make raised beds for the veggies & hubby has to make me a chicken palace & an enclosed run - we have mink in the forest here, so it will have to be strong!

So, that's me for now - more stories of Sunwood to come - I'm thinking this is just the tip of the iceberg....
Julie.

Oooh Ina, tell us more!

Hi Julie. Gosh what an eventful time it has been for you! It all sounds great and three cheers for your range - and the more wood you chop the cheaper it will be to heat your house.

Ooohh - that sounds like my idea of heaven! And mink in the woods - you'll never need to buy a winter coat again!
Good luck in your new home - and keep us regailed with your tales!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

It all sounds wonderful - obviously the problems were not welcome at first, but I think in the long term a few hills to climb helps to make you realise how much better YOU'VE made it. :-)

I wish we had a range :flower:

Oooh, Ina - adventure time? We have a spare room you know - and there's a small house down the road for sale too - but it's VERY wild!!

MMM..... I had to giggle to myself.... I bought my daughter & her little one out to visit the house in July & she was given a kitten (she had no say in the matter, really!) Anyway, little Leah called her 'Miley' (a tweenie fan) and when we moved in here, the mum cat & 2 other kits were left behind..... as was the springer cross puppy
We managed to find a new home for the pup, and the mum cat has decided she doesn't want to be here, I think - not seen her for days - but I named the other 2 kits Molly & Mandy.... and this morning, I realised why! Your nickname must have stuck in my mind somewhere
Our eldest Basset boy, who was raised with 4 cats has decided that he must make it his life's ambition to befriend the kits..... this entails him barking at them & running at them full pelt... they then escape up a tree, or sit on the joists in the derelict cottage & look down at him.... he then spends up to 3 hours ( yep, 3 hours, but longer if I don't go & fetch him back on a leash!) barking at them & generally getting himself worked to a right tizz waiting for them to come down.... they sit waiting for him to leave before they come down - deadlock!!

I'm a bit worried actually that he sees a mink - I don't want him chasing one of those thru the woods... hubby has put up a fenced area around the side of the garden which we use most of the time, but I like to let them explore at least once a day around the whole place.... which then doesn't happen, because of the kits anyway!

Shirley - my daughter rents a brand new bungalow - all mod cons & very tasteful - and she can't wait for us to book a short hols somewhere so she can come & stay & play with Stan!

Now, I'm not sure if it's harmful, but if anyone out there has range experience, I'd love to know....
I am running Stan 24/7... the thermostat is broken, but I'm using the manual controls & am getting quite good getting the oven temperatures stable... however...
I have the damper set to 'oven' rather than 'bypass'.... so this gets the oven hot - bearing in mind that in the these 3 back rooms there is only 1 rad in the bathroom - and if I'm not cooking, & the oven temp gets to 300C , I open the oven door for an extra blast of heat, rather than turning the draught control shut...... once it's all really warm & toasty, I bank it & then shut off the draught control. I know I can turn the damper to bypass to send the heat only for the water & rads, but having the oven 'on' rather than bypassing makes these rooms warmer - and since these are the rooms we use all the time......
Is it ok to use the range this way? I don't want to abuse Stan - I want him to live a long & healthy lifespan until we can afford to replace him with Don!! (Donard is the upgraded Stanley!)

Have a good day everyone - it's the Halloween Bank Holiday out here today, but I'm going to be wheelbarrowing trees & cutting some logs, and whatever other diversions I can find to do!
Julie.

 Huh! Funny......

Did I tell you the story about the folks who decorated an old irish cottage around 11 years ago?
They had new hardwood windows put in & painted the one in the bathroom using white gloss..... orange emulsion was used on the walls.... on top of red gloss & then pink emulsion..... no primer coats have ever been used on walls or woodwork.... which meant that the window frame scraped off really nice, leaving a gorgeous window frame & sill... on the walls however....

We got up last thursday morning after hubby spent the night before putting a white emulsion undercoat on - the paint was still wet!! Not only that, but it had run down the walls overnight & had puddled on the floor tiles!
So... 4 hours of washing the walls & floor, & then most of the paint has now been scraped off the plaster walls - because there was no preparation for the red gloss, it's come off like wallpaper - altho it wasn't half as easy!

Anyway, we now have a fully prepped bathroom ready for a splash of cream paint - I keep telling hubby that every time we do one job, it creates three further jobs - at this rate, we'll be advertising for a full time helper I think!!
Julie.
