Touching base

Post: # 127728Post Brij »

Hey guys, just thought I'd check in on you all!

What's new then?

Lots of love from your favourite previous-ish addict that's now pretending to be a student

Well, are you sitting comfortably...?

Ex nurse (hated working for NHS).
BA(hons) in philosophy and politics (hard to get jobs with that one).
PGDip in Environmental protection (didn't get the MSc cos the man at Groundwork said I was too old for him waste a placement on)
Now an aromatherapist, soapmaker, crocheter extraordinaire, and bugger the lot of them.

However being at uni was one of the happiest times of my life, enjoy it.

Everyone says that about uni, but I must admit, I don't like it that much. I'd rather be working. Well, I'd rather be earning loads of money without working, but I'd take work over uni. I think it's cos with uni, I find it hard to just leave it - there's always more I can do to do better, so I can't just leave it, and give myself a couple of hours off. At least with most jobs, once it's done, you can go home and leave it behind.

Hi Brij! Lovely to see you haven't fallen off the world! Keep up the hard work - but don't forget to check in now and then when you take a break!

A wise person once told me that prospective employers don't like first class degrees - they prefer someone who's seen a bit of life, joined societies, and had some enjoyment out of life. So, yes, you can always do better - even those who'll get the 1st - but it's better to knock off and do other things too. Most peole only get one go at uni, so it's your duty, dammit, enjoy!!!!

WHAT??? You are never to old... I got mine at the ripe old age of 43; that was 7 years ago, and I'm thinking of doing another one! And I always thought that retirement was a good time to go for a PhD!

Hi Brij - so where are you now???? I thought you already were a student in Paris! :? Or was that a year out 'pretending' to study and now you are back in the UK?

My husband did a language degree like that at Uni with a year in Paris and 8 months in Germany. I don't think he did any work though whilst he was in Paris!

Yup. Before age discrimination legislation of course. I was about 43. He said I would be competing with 20 somethings with much greater experience in environmental protection, that I stood very little chance of getting a job at the end of it so he wouldn't waste a placement on me. My tutor wasn't chuffed, I was strangely relieved that he didn't B/S me. So I took the PG Dip and ran - didn't even bother applying for jobs.

Aawww, you guys have been wondering where I am! Shucks!

I'm trying to enjoy it, I really am... I just don't really like being told what to do, and that includes being given homework.

I'm in Southampton til this year's finished, then who knows? Will probably go back to Paris to do some au-pairing, that'll give me some more time knocking around before I have to be a proper adult!
