Diabetic Chocolate?

Post: # 124220Post StripyPixieSocks »

So many sections I could post this on... so much confusion

Anyway... has anyone ever tasted diabetic chocolate? Does it taste like regular chocolate at all and can I use it to melt and coat something like Brazil Nuts?

My Dad used to love them but he's a Diabetic now so can't have too many of them and I would like to make him some for Christmas.

The diabetic society regards diabetic choclate as a scam. It's not that there are low sweetner version just that a lot of so called diabetic produxts are seen as "treats" and generally these are high in fat.

Yjere is a careline on diabeties Uk website. give that a ring for the definitive view.

I agree with Big Al. My Dad was a diabetic for many years and I often bought him diabetic chocolates for birthdays and Christmas. I only found out MUCH later that this was usually binned as the taste was not good at all! Mom used to ration him to two normal chocolates per day and this apparently did him no harm whatsoever. His diabetes was controlled by diet alone. I know every diabetic is different so probably contacting an organisation like this will give you the best information.
Growing old is much better then the alternative!

Thanks peeps :)

I might just make him a small amount of normal ones then... he's type 2 diet controlled but I just wanted to check out the options before I made anything... I might carry on looking around for some different ideas.

The diabetic chocolate I know from Germany tasted quite nice - not exactly the same as "normal" chocolate, but not that different, either. (A friend was diabetic, so sometimes the stuff was in the house and we shared it. He liked it well enough!) The only difference to ordinary chocolate was the use of fruit sugar (fructose) rather than normal in it. I sometimes used fructose in baking, too.

I'm not a doctors or anything and i am on the way to being diabetic in that my sugar is rising each yearly test but there is some research into the good effects of cocao on diabetes. Maybe if you dipped half the nut into the plain chocolate then he could have twice as many but please check this out for yourself.

I'll have a word with my Mom but half dipping would be nice or drizzling it with chocolate.

I know Christmas is a long way off yet but I have to start planning with my parents because they're the type who buy whatever they need and when you ask them say "Oh spend the money on yourself that would be a great gift for us" ARGHH!

Could you make your own to suit his needs and taste? I got into raw chocoalte and have never looked back! It's really easy to make basic chocolate; you just need some cacao paste and a sweetener of your choice (honey, agave syrup etc). I also add kukuma (which is a sweet powdered root) and cacao butter for texture. There are plenty of recipes out there just google it.

This is chocolate which tastes good, has all the health properties that cacao is reported to have and actually satisfies those "needs" for which we all crave chocolate but never actually get satisfied by the cadbury's variety. Because of this you don't tend to scoff it in great quantities.

OK so I'm evangelising now, but take it from me I'm about as far from a raving vegan rawfood nutcase as they come, but raw chocolate rocks!

Sounds interesting... when making chocolates I use covature or expensive high cocoa solids chocolate as Dairy Milk just doesn't cut it for me... either to cook with or eat.

Thanks, I will look into it

Absolutely nothing......but the next time someone tells me within the first 5 minutes of meeting them how much raw food they eat (usually expressed as a percentage), I may well find the nearest small creature and bite its head off in front of them  Its big around here, and frankly i don't care what you eat, but "holier than thou" is annoying in any form!

There is another downside to diabetic chocolate, too much of it gives you the sh*ts, although Thorntons version was approved by the diabetic society.

I happen to hail from the dreary town where the Thorntons packing plant is. Staff policy is that you may eat as much as you like, whilst you are at the conveyor (or at least it was, doesn't sound very modern H&S!), how many newbies have been caught out scoffing the diabetic chocs thinking that they were eating "healthy chocolate", only to find themselves having to run back and forth to the loo!

Cool, I was just winding you up actually. I was a fruitarian for 9 years then went to watch pools play whitby in a pre season friendly. My wife, son and I were walking down the quayside and apparently I dissapeared.... My wife caught up with me and said.....I thought you didn't eat cooked food let alone a bloody fish !! I had wandered into a fish shop and bought fish and chips but to this day I don't know why..... Since then I've been back on a typical diet but I do feel a difference in the energy levels since changing but I'm too lazy now to put all the effort back into a fruitarian diet....

HAHA I used to work in a Thornton's Branch and I can tell you after a week working there I didn't eat any kind of sweet stuff for almost 5 years... the smell made me feel sick!

Oddly there is a policy in the factory (not in their branches) but very little gets eaten because of the sickly smell factor!

I like Chocolate again these days but still can't eat anything made by Thornton's!

... I only worked there for 9 months :?
