Gel Airfresheners

Post: # 122560Post StripyPixieSocks »

I don't know if these have been posted before but after giving up buying gel airfresheners I wondered if they could be made at home and they can!

1 Cup Distilled Water
4 Packets Unflavoured Gelatin (Knox?)
10-20 drops of essential oil
1-2 Tbsp Salt (or Potassium Sorbate or a splash of Vodka as a mold inhibitor)
Couple of drops of food colouring (optional)

1. Bring the water to the boil and add the gelatin, mix until dissolved.
2. Add Essential Oils, Food Colouring if using and / or any one of the mold inhibitor suggestions and stir well.
3. Pour into a clean jar, baby food jars are ideal.
4. Leave to set at room temperature and either decorate jar and place around the house or seal with lid, decorate and give as a gift.

I'm going to make some Jasmine scented ones next week :)

What a brilliant idea! Very clever. I shall definitely be having a go at it! Might have to wait a week or so, as I am off on holiday for a few days. Very ish- next door neighbours caravan in Somerset! Sorry about the petrol to get there, but will only be walking for a week! pbf

When we finally get the parts to mend our car I will be off to the shops to buy packets and packets of Gelatine as I can see this being a really good gift for Christmas.

My Mom loves 'smelly things' in the house but my Dad hates them so she doesn't get to buy them often... when I used to make Pot-Pourri I used to give her bowls of it and he couldn't complain because she was 'testing' it for me heehee :angel12:

I'm also going to get some Christmas type oils such as Cinnamon, Vanilla, Cloves, Anise, Orange etc and have a go at making a warm Christmas smelling one for around the flat... colour it a lovely shade of Red and decorate it... should be fun and I'll be sure to let you know how I get on!

oooh nice.

I got a bottle of christmas oil in a helath food shop near me. I can't remember what it was called now, and i'm 200 miles away from home, so i can't check...

It smelt wonderful, it really is Christmas in a bottle, and its all essential oils so would be finefor the gel thingy.

Remind me in October and i'll dig it out and se what its actually called (might be called Christmas oil...or Yule oil or something).

Gelatine?? Ew!

Think this would work with agar agar by any chance?

OOh thanks Fee that would be great

Uhm... I suppose Agar Agar would be just as well, after all that is the gel they use for putting in Petri dishes in labs (as far as I am aware) but I'm unsure as to how it would hold up not having experimented with it before and not knowing if the Essential Oils would have any detrimental effects on it.
