Dear All, Well I'm new to the site but have been trying to be self-sufficientish for 30 plus years - ever since I discovered the Centre for Alternative Technology In mid-Wales. I couldn't aspire to their alternative energy ideas but the general ethos got home to me!
Has anybody mentioned sprouting beans etc. at home yet? This is one of the cheapest and easiest ways of adding vitamins etc to the diet. I mostly use mung beans but lentils, aduki beans etc are fine - whatever you like the taste of. I put about 2 tbsps. in a 2lb jam jar (or similar), cover the top with a piece of old netcurtain, rinse in warm water, strain through net, put in warmish darkish place (I just use a darkish corner of the kitchen, on top of the work surface). Then rinse in cold water two or three times a day. Don't leave them standing in water, drain well. Then in 4 or 5 days you should have sprouts which you can use raw in salads, cook in stir fries, whatever. They will keep in the fridge for several days. They are nice in sandwiches with creamcheese too. Good luck! Guildford Gran

Hi guildford gran

I love bean sprouts but unfortunately I have a habit of sowing them and then forgetting about them for a couple of weeks

Re: Sprouting seeds
Sunflower seeds sound good, I've got one growing in the garden, do you think I could just keep those seeds and sprout them or do I need to go and buy some?
The reason I keep my sprouting jar on the kitchen worktop is to stop me forgetting it, having had several lots of sprouts that turned into PLANTS! Seriously tho there dead easy and don't need all that special equipment some books seem to suggest.

Hiya and welcome, Guildford Gran!
I usually have a jar of lentils "on the sprout". Last time I left them for rather too long in the jar and had trouble getting them out...
