With earlies, you don't wait for the tops to die down. Flowering is the usual signal to start cropping, and that occurs from ... errrm ... about now. There is absolutely no reason I know of why your potatoes should taste anything but delicious.

Strange in what way? Which variety have you grown? (Moved this to the herbs and veggies section btw as I thought you'd get more answers here)

I read there are less calories in new pots- not that I care, but I guess that means less starch so there must therefore be more of something tastier than starch!

new earlies didn't flower at all, but I just dug them up and ate them coz I couldn't wait

Mine are absolutely enormous like baking spuds, which is a bit disappointing as I love tiny little new potatoes! The variety is Amandine is case anyone wants to know. We're roasting some right now to see how they turn out.

Changing the thread somewhat, does anyone know what would happen if I planted some spuds in the ground now?
I didn't have any space earlier in the year, but I figured if I throw some in the ground and watch I wont lose anything

providing the frosts don't get them, you should have some decent spuds around mid-December.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.
