I spent some time on Sanday in the late 1970s ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanday,_Orkney )
Lovely in the summer, but pretty bleak and not much going for it from a farming piont of view. I would go a bit further and head for the shetlands.
The rest of Orkney I can't comment upon.
