Farm Sales

Post: # 89679Post Thurston Garden »

Being an agricultural region, there are regular farm sales here and I enjoy going to them, sometimes getting a bargain (new Land Rover door top £5 at the last one!) or just to walk round and look at the lots.

Three years ago there was a good one - two brothers in their 70's who had collected all sorts of agricultural stuff over the years and were selling up due to old age and not being able to insure their growing collection. It was at this sale that bought my good old Jalo Cultivators

Today was something special though - loads of vintage tractors, bulldozers, boxscrapers, vintage implements, carts, you name it! It was a lovely sunny day too and the crowds turned out in force to support a collector who had passed away and his family had been forced to sell his collection.

Some had been fully restored.

There were lots of vintage crawlers!

How could I have hooked this trap upto my Land Rover?

Image
There were 5 or 6 of these Caterpillars that fetched between £5,000 and £7,000 each!

Image
The auctioneer (who also sold me my Jalo's and door top) would do the 600 lots without a break and after doing all the tools/small items (which included a full pallet piled 3ft high with tractor magazines!) was transported round the big lots in the field on a trailer.

Image
He is somewhere in the middle of the crowd! A great turn out on a great day to see what is becoming a rare event - soon there will be no vintage stuff like this left to sell.

The threshing machine was pretty well thrashed. Nothing some time would not have sorted though. Has your 110 got a PTO to run a belt drum though? Perhaps you could run the belt from your trike??

Lovely stuff!

That trap that you were thinking of hooking onto your landrover would have done nicely for a pony - or that's what it looks like... Just right for your weekly shopping trip!

I secretly dream of that... Turn up at the local supermarket with a pony trap! Just to see the look on folk's face would make me overcome my aversion to supermarkets!

Ina it took me a while to get that photo- there was a chap giving it a thorough examination whilst describing it to someone on his mobile phone. Sadly we left quite early and this was amongst the last lots so I have no idea what it would go for. Someone would get a bargain I think because being at the end of the sale, I suspect it would be well after 4pm by the time they got to it. The sale started at 11!

Complete with grubber to pull behind it!

Just think - after someone bought these, they had to get them home!

That MF has a proper staircase!

I think that's a bit too big for Stoney... But the grubber looks nice. That was always my favourite way of cultivating a field. You can go up and down all day, and dream along...

They are great, aren't they... They are the type of machine that you can still fix with a hammer and a spanner (and a kick in the right place, if nothing else helps!) - and you don't need a degree in computer technology to run it...

Ina it is for exactly that reason that our sole mode of transport is an old Landy!

I do get glared at when in Dunbar but it is usually caked in mud cos its in the field almost on a daily basis.

Also I love all things old
