I ahd the problem that my UNIQUE tax reference number was given to someone else so we kept getting letters to her, and demands for payment which were hers and all kinds of foul ups.
Recently thrashed it out and had to surrender my UTR and havent yet been reissued with one, so will probably be accruing fines as we speakeven tho have sent in my tax form. Argh.

Had a tax demand here in France from the UK Tax Auth, 4 years after leaving UK, sent them copies of all documents showing that I had completely cleared my Tax affairs before leaving, no reply for 3 months, then another demand, at that point gave up and threw it in the bin, and have never heard from them again. That was 12 years ago so I suppose there is still time.

Thanks Milims for explaining. As we worked full time when in England and didn't have kids, that probably explains why I've never heard of it!

I am quite surprised to hear that there is something out there that sounds even more complicated/useless than French bureaucracy!!!
