Blackout!

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

#? ) Change your internet settings to view pages in Black and White settings. Black background with white text.
For Firefox:
Tools >Options.
Content icon, Click color.
Change the colors.
Deselect "Allow websites to choose colors themselves.

While this looks a little more drab than other colors, you'll save watt after watt of power.

Thanks, I had meant to add it to the 101 list. Oops.

Glad to be here.

Its a good idea but only necessary if you have a CRT monitor. LCD monitors (which already average about 1/3 the wattage of the CRT) doesn't use significantly less energy when the screen is dark than when it is bright. See the following page:

http://blogs.wsj.com/numbersguy/does-a- ... icity-104/

I saw another site somewhere that showed that the average computer user would save $17 per year in electricity if they switched from a CRT to a LCD. CRTs averaged about 150 watts and LCDs averaged 40 watts.

Also, most desk top computers have 300-500 watt power supplies. My laptop power supply uses about 45 watts.

Very sorry on this one, but as a grapic artist-come photographer-come whatever the heck gets some cash in at the moment, i need my brightness to show me where to put the colours.

I am however investing in a laptop sometime next year so that I can work on the hop and not have my frankenstein's monster of a pc on so much.
