101 reasons that the train is better than flying

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

101 reasons that the train is better than flying

Post: # 58865Post Andy Hamilton »

1. Book in advance and it can be cheaper (eg. Bristol - Edinburgh £36 return, airport tax is £30 alone for this flight)
2. You can bring on as much as you can carry.
3. You don't have to have a stranger asking you stupid questions and looking through your bag.
4. Airports can be miles out of town (London Stanstead) train stations are generally on the edge of the city/town center and sometimes slap bang in the middle (london)
5. You can move seats/carriage if you don't like the look of the people you are sharing with.
6. No baggage retrieval.

7. you have a great deal more time to chat up the train conductor and get some free drinks.
8. Train travel is sooooo romantic compared to flying (not connected to point 7 )
9: you actually get to see some country! You get to experience the world rather than being cooped up in an aluminum tube.
10: the toilets are bigger on trains than on planes. :flower:

12. Long distance you get the sense of travel, of moving through different landscapes. Not getting in a tin box in the rain and emerging in scorching heat, with no concept or appreciation of the places travelled through.

13. You can`t take a plane through the channel tunnel - which I love and is vastly underused.

15. Fewer queues to wait in.
16. Don't have to fight your way through the hordes come boarding time.
17. Fewer stupid restrictions about what you're allowed to take on.
18. Train travel, especially in foreign countries, is a fab way to meet people.
19. If you travel overnight, you can get a proper bed to sleep in without paying through the nose.
20. You can tell everything about a country from its trains.
They're not weeds - that's a habitat for wildlife, don't you know?

21. The rocking of a train is gentler on your soul than the turbulence of an aircraft.
22. More people survive train cashes than do plane crashes.
