Sorry, couldn't quite keep myself from smiling...
On the other hand, I wish I could preserve some of the heat that makes my livingroom unbearable at the moment (24 degree! - far too hot for me...) for winter, when it barely reaches 16 degree, which isn't all that great either!

How unsulated is your home Ina? Maybe it would make a difference?

Did you get living room curtains yet Ina? I did get a quote from a shop to make up living room curtains for me - there are three windows, one is French doors and one is normal French size and the other is much bigger.
The quote was for over €1,300 and add another €400 ish for lined curtains! Talk about
!!! Gulp!
(That's more than I pay EDF for 2 years worth of leccy! Just to keep this on topic

Excellent word, Andy. Was that deliberate?Andy Hamilton wrote:How unsulated is your home Ina?
Unsulated - adjective; eg: 'An unsulated home' - a home lacking in insulation
Unsulation - noun; a non-material that prevents a property from retaining heat in cold weather (compare with anti-matter), or a measure of the lack of insulation
Unsulate - verb; to not put in any insulation

I nearly keeled over after getting a similar quote for the very big curtains I needed in my flat. Then I put my fetching thinking hat on, and hopped down the nearest charity shops. Since most of the houses around me are victorian, there were loads of clapped out curtains of suitable size. Bought a pair in order to reuse the linings and tapes (for £3!), and bought a couple of bolts of plain linen from Ikea (you could dye these easily), and got sewing. Now I have some spiffy, perfectly sized and lined curtains and all for under £30.Millymollymandy wrote:Did you get living room curtains yet Ina? I can hear those extortionate curtain makers grinding their teeth in frustration already!!

I'm not very good at sewing... but I did make a couple of pairs of curtains... using a hand operated sewing machine... and boy did I feel proud afterwards. Ok they may not have been absolutely perfect but they were still lovely - and as with all things, practice makes perfect.
Now... on that note I will have to practice what I preach and have another go... got no curtains in the sitting room and there are folk staying in the holiday cottage next door so we could do with some privacy. Got a load of old curtains that don't fit... so will see if I can make something out of them.

Sewing is one of those things that makes it clear that I am, for all my pretence otherwise, just a 'pathetic male'. I understand the basic theory involved in mending something, or sewing on a button, but it will take me frustrating hours to do the simplest of things. I just don't get it. And in the end it seems a most unsatisfying way to spend significant periods of one's life.
I also concede to not have fully come to terms with the principles of good cooking, growing, and ironing, too. But give me a cylinder head to take off, or a staircase to make, and I'm your man. I can even do flat-pack assembly.

I can do the growing and the cooking but at ironing I draw the line!
