Reasons to grow your own

.... so that you can be a smug git and announce that for Easter Sunday dinner we are having roast with new potatoes and French beans, with rhubarb and cream for pud.
OK, the spuds were volunteer plants that were in the way, and there's nothing special about rhubarb in April, but the beans are from my window sill and well worth growing again.

Oh and tomorrow it's cold roast with the first salad of the year, fresh hearted little gem lettuce, beetroot, cold new potatoes, spring onions and (you guessed it) fresh picked tomatoes.

I bought some seed from Suttons called "Speedy" which were last
The 3 varieties I got from Real Seeds all germinated at the same time, so now I have 4 plants of the 4 different varieties all now in the hydroponics. I'll report on which variety is first to produce a crop, anyone want to put some money on "Speedy" ?

The windowsill beans are Aquilon.

I'm only slightly jealous.

We're eating chard, beetroot tops and kale from the polytunnel (which is now mended, although looking a little the worse for its injuries - the winds managed to buckle some of the hoops so it now has a slight list to the right ) so it's not too bad, considering the horrendous weather and other things. Oh, and we found a tub of spud plants we sowed back end - they appear to be coming along nicely - no spuds yet though.

I'm amazed at how well our little polytunnel continued to protect just about everything in it even when a good half of it had blown off. And the

I hope that's an outside windowsill GA.
Broad beans need bees to pollinate or you won't get any pods at all.

I'm just getting the allotment into production for the season - mind am having to eat out of the freezer which was stuffed at the back end and is only going down slowly.
