student employment in glasgow...how hard to find??

Post: # 262104Post safronsue »

We are not in the uk ourselves so it's hard to judge... is it really really reallly hard to get a job doing anything at all in glasgow when you are a student ? i am starting to think my boy may be work shy. i know there are lots of students but, come on, its a big city.

I think the job situation in the UK in general is pretty tough at the moment ss, my gal's and her partner have been looking in Glasgow for months with no success as yet.

However most student unions have jobs and other contacts. If he goes to his NUS office he may have more success.

you can find minimum wage work in glasgow. in resteraunts/cafes/bars/cleaning offices ect ect.

iv never had a problem getting a job as a student in galsgow, although that was nearly 5 years ago. but my friends all have work. if your willing to do anything you will find somthing. its the skilled jobs thats the issue.
my cousin got made redundant then spent a year going to interview after interview, with 200 peoople each applying for the same post ( somthing to do with computers ). but there ARE jobs, you just have to keep looking, eventually you'll find somthing.

What would normally be regarded as student jobs accross the UK are currently being chased down by graduates.

The E4S site is interesting - but if you leave out the professional chugger opportunities, those that require a specific qualification (TEFL), then most of the others are generic UK-wide adverts (multiple locations, UK wide) and many of those have no certainty of any income (freelance from home, form/survey filling).. there's not much of substance on that list when you get down to reading it.

It's difficult to suggest anything without knowing what he can do, what skills he has, etc. As a student in Aberdeen many years ago I walked the main streets and answered any vacancy posted in a shop window. Eventually it paid off - being on my way home from a photo portrait and wearing a shirt and tie probably helped. It's a buyers market for labour at the moment with too many people chasing too few positions, presentation and application are key.

To be fair, it depends on what kind of work he CAN take.

I worked my way through in bars and the odd agency job.

Get him to sign up to a few agencies - I did waitressing and reception work. Agency work is not constant, byt sometimes they might come through for the odd job. Bars are the best bet because they're evening work, so perfect for after lectures.

Maybe even call centre work, but then that depends on what time he has off from lectures sometimes.
