Yay! I've got an allotment!

Post: # 247208Post Davie Crockett »

After being on the waiting list for nearly 2 years, I've finally got an allotment!

I can't wait to get down there and turn the turf ready for spring as apparently it's been fallow for a year
. It has a pond (left by the previous tenant) which has resident frogs and toads. Hopefully they'll help to keep the slug population down.

I need to plan my planting spaces now...

Enjoy!! Nows the time to get stuck in. Break that soil up & let the frosts kill any possible deseases, & its not too late to get the broad beans, spring greens, etc in for early next year.
it's either one or the other, or neither of the two.

Yep, turn over that ground, im starting this morning turning mine over.
Im not bothering planting anything for next year now though. I planted jap onions and cabbage last year around this time but the garden was under snow for nearly six weeks solid and everything was dead so not taking a punt this year.
Just going to weed, turn it over and later on add lashings of horse muck. :salute:

Quick update: Lying fallow for a year had allowed couch grass and convulvulus to take hold. So I've had to resort to using glyphosate systemic weedkiller. It's not an option I took lightly as I hate using chemicals, but in this case I feel it was the best course of action to give us a clean slate.

I've just acquired an old rotovator from fleabay and need to do a bit of renovation on that before I churn the whole plot and quarter it for crop rotation, there was a piece which had a pile of rotted manure before it was left. I'll be planting Potatoes there, I also need to dig a 2 spade deep trench in the next plot for next years beans (The remains of an old compost heap can go in there before digging in and earthing over).

Happy times!

Brilliant, you'll never regret it. Not only will you have fresh, wholesome veggies but you'll get all that exercise too - what more can you want!
