Interesting, but I think there might be cutural elements to be considered that Poe's law does not recognise.

I realise that I am sticking my neck out here, and this is a personal observation, but I reckon that British speakers of English are far better at spotting parody than other native speakers because so much of our humour is rooted in sarcasm and irony.

Have you ever noticed, for example, the habit of Americans to add "just kidding" to the end of sentences that, to British ears, are clearly and unambiguously ironic?

I don't think that this inclination to judge every written statement from a presumption that it might be a parody is a good thing. It's certainly got me into trouble more than once.

No, indeed, and also it has to be taken in context, and with foreknowledge of the poster.

It is fun though, and the thing I really object to is people putting it on everything they post.

i.e. Had a Poo, or was it a Poe?

Went to the shops :flower:

Met my Mum :pale:

She bought me chips

I trod on doggie do do's :angryfire:

Banged my head :banghead:

Itched my sore head

Saluted a marching band :salute:

Got crowned the king :king:

Felt Sick :pukeright:

Ow and I believe firmly that creationist theory is right, being gay is wrong, and Jesus died so that we could live in perpetual happiness.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

After serious ( ) reflection, I've spotted a wobbly.

If I post "You're mad" no-one can tell if I'm serious or not.
If I post "You're mad  " I'm indicating that I'm not serious.

But if I post "You're mad   " does that mean that I'm twice as not serious, or am I saying that I'm not serious about the indication that I'm not serious?

:?

Ah so a double smiley makes a dig, like two negatives making a positive?

Better watch out for that one in the Spring Raspberry pruning debate.
