I'm really glad it all worked out. Certainly a couple of excitement levels above the normal chat posts! Well done for calling them, I bet they were not in the least bit bothered by having to come to have a look either. But just how DO the papers discover these things? Scary people!

yay! glad all is well

i thought they might be dummies - apparently there were lots used by the Dad's army - but didn't want to say so in case that made you go back to the not calling police option!

Wicked - I did join an Army Ordance disposal Forum though as a result, asked them the best time to move Raspeberries as I'd seen them in Saving Private Ryan.

(ok sorry, but it had to be done)

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

Glad everything turned out OK, Susie. Better safe than extremely sorry or dead.

Wow, just look at all the excitement I missed being at work all day. I'm so glad it all worked out safely though.

When I was a teenogre, I lived in Warminster, which has a large school of infantry attached. Lots of people had various bits of weaponry lying around. I can remember playing catch with a grenade with some friends at one point (we had to trust the guy who owned it that it wasn't live).

Wow, quite the story. Glad it worked out safely. There seems to be a lot of that going around right now...
Thursday, October 27, 2011 A Yonkers man found what looked like a land mine in his grandfather’s attic — but instead of leaving it be and calling cops, he brought it to a firehouse.

That dopey move shut down the firehouse and forced cops to cordon off a busy business area for nearly an hour and a half this afternoon while the Westchester bomb squad investigated.

At about 1:25 p.m., the man “non-chalantly” walked in to Fire Station 13 at 340 Kimball Ave. with the suspected bomb in box, said Yonkers Police Lt. Pat McCormack.

The area was cleared at about 2:50 p.m. “It doesn’t look like it was an operable device,” McCormack said.

McCormack said it’s better if people who find suspected explosives leave them alone and call police.

The emergency caused plenty of disruption for area merchants.

I´ve got one somewhere you could have!

Acquired it after a similar incident, except there were about 5, and the builders had decided to take them home, ( before knowing they were training dummies!) quite obvious when ckleaned upp, or these were at least, as hollow and no base, but when encrusted with dirt and rust .......

Anywya I askked the nice chaps from the bomb disposal squad and they let me have onee as a souvenir....( not the dopey builders though!

The place had been a training camp at some time it later turned out!

That does seem bad...... but..........

Late 70´s or earlyb 80´s... a suspect package was found in Picadilly, London, outside a possible target premises ( Air France, I think)
area cordoned off, building evacuated, major traffic chaos caused, etc etc
Bomb squad called and examined package, and cleared it as a very good hoax, so picked it up and walked into local nick , Vine street, just behind Picadilly Circus, where he proceeds to examine it further for possible clues to maker............... when suddenly..."this is a very realistic.... -F********* G H*****........., its not a hoax its live.................... "
which it apparently was.thereby leading to even further traffic chaos, the police station closed and evacuated ( lots of rather red faces there).etc etc.........
so if the so called "experts" cant be sure.not much hope for us mere mortals!

I made the front page of the local paper. I am the woman who didn't want to be named. (I actually phoned the police hours earlier but the bomb squad took a while to get here as they come from Colchester).

(Enjoy the quote from the gardener... ;-) ).

Oooh I've missed all the excitement too, but was fun (and scary!!) to read this story in its entirety.

I do love the quote from the gardener Susie! Oh so terrified I'll just wander off up the tip with them in my wheelbarrow......

Glad everything is OK and they are dummies though - phew!

Hehe, Susie this post made my day! I know it isn't a laughing matter, but I had to snigger at the thought of the wheelbarrow. Or the specilly labelled lead lined skip at the recycling in between 'Timber (NO WOODCHIP)' and 'Non-Recyclables' which said 'Unexploded WW2 Ordinance'. Tee hee,

Glad you lived to tell the tale!
