Re: It's ... it's ...
It seems that in the last couple of years we have had a reasonable spell in September. Hence I usually take my holiday now and have been fortunate with the weather. Ok, its not as warm as it could be, especially at night, but at least it is tolerable for working. So I best get off here and go out and enjoy it, and get some more jobs done in the garden.
Has anyone seen the plot, I seem to have lost mine?

Just round the corner from me, there's a Rowan tree covered in berries - but that's also showing fresh growth and blossom on the tips of its branches. Very strange!Dr.Syn wrote:Seems the whole world's upside down We have primroses in flower!

I have a theory.... It's the governments fault!
Speaking of flowers, we have a magnolia stellata and a magnolia soulangala both in flower as I type. The problem is these are spring flowering shrubs / trees....
As I say I blame the government.....

Re: It's ... it's ...
Just noticed some primroses flowering too but that's not unusual in the autumn, nor are the little flowers on my rhododendron. It's been hot here and summery but the temps have been up and down since June - suits me fine!

One of the things that is strange this year in my garden, I picked a few ripe blackcurrants this afternoon ... in September ?
I have three bushes, an early, a mid season and a late. The early one flowered very early and then it turned cold and the other two just refused to even try to sprout a leaf, let alone a flower, and they didn't really catch up.
I picked the early one in June, huge crop, but the other two ripened up in dribs and drabs and are still doing it.
Weird.

Re: It's ... it's ...
We're still waiting for spring and summer. It's been cool, damp, dark and wet apart from a week of sunshine in April and another a week ago. And even then both of those weeks were cold and windy. The vegetable garden barely exists—even the weeds haven't grown much. The only really successful crop was the lettuces. They've thrived. Even the elderflower didn't flower properly and there are only a few small green berries on them now.

I so agree with you, I love it and all the things that happen this end of the year!bonniethomas06 wrote:I really love the autumnal feel in the air now...I have the urge to get my black polo neck out of the wardrobe and start cooking pulses. My total favorite time of year!

Here's a question(S) and please don't let it desend into thesame anarchic name calling like the last question / comment I made in the " I'll think I'll..." thread.
So it's mainly one for the older gardeners etc but all are welcome to chip in. I know I've blamed the government et al when we all know it's climatic change but the question(S) is/ are -
HAVE WE ALWAYS HAD INDETERMINATE WEATHER OR HAVE WE ALWAYS HAD FOUR CLEARLY DEFINED SEASONS OF SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN AND WINTER?
IF WE HAVEN'T THEN WHEN DID IT CHANGE NOTICABLY?
I've only been interested in gardening etc for the last 20 years or so and a large part of that was reduced to mowing grass so it's a genuine question and I ask the older gardeners / land holders, especially the land holders who use the land for a living.
Take care and please keep it nice.
Alan
P.S. Mods; if it does desend into chaos can one of you please lock the thread.

Don't see why a question like that should descend into chaos!
As far as I'm concerned, we've always had 4 seasons. Wherever I lived (except perhaps Fiji
). It's just that some winters have been mild, some have been harsh, some summers hot and dry, others wet and cool. If they were all the same life would be very boring, so enjoy your seasons everyone because living somewhere without defined seasons is boring! You just can't beat seeing things springing into life in spring.

Re: It's ... it's ...
For once, Bob, I know what you mean. I'm sure that, until recently, we had four definite seasons. The dates that they moved from one to another varied from year to year, but you could always tell whether it was winter, spring, summer or autumn.
Now we seem to have a climate that is more like those chocolates where you never know what filling you're going to get until you bite into them. We had lovely hot weather and a drought in April, then autumn hit overnight in August. According to some of these posts, it's spring in some parts of the country and, I bet, we'll have snow next week on Birdlip Hill.
