it depends what sort of thing you're after...
I am a member of loads of forums, beekeeping, german shepherds, poultry & quail ones, River cottage (dont post much at all on there) and some "interest" ones (I know, really sad!)
I love "accidental smallholder" as there is alot of livestock info that I find invaluable, and really nice, friendly & supportive members.
Ish gives me the sense of sufficiency I dream of, the info on energy & stuff is great... but I need a regular livestock fix too

Its been interesting looking at some of the other boards recommended, and I'll probably visit them again. But here I have always felt comfortable admitting how little I know without fear of ridicule - there's a feeling of all moving more or less in the same direction, despite our differences, and i value that.

There's another board out there that has a specific forum that interests me. It's called 'Members "Self Sufficient Living" Journals'. It allows members to post a running journal of their experiences on a daily basis. I haven't found something like that here. Please let me know if it's here..or if this has already been discussed before.

I've given up all the other numerous self-sufficiency or gardening forums I've looked at / joined (unless I'm looking for a very specific answer). Don't know why really, but this one has a nice relaxed layout and people who seem to genuinely want to share their wide knowledge and experiences - I guess I agree with what Old Jerry wrote "I like the fact that this one has just nice, normal people".

Downsizer is fairly good. But as here, I don't visit or post as often as I'd like due to time constraints.

I grew fed up with River Cottage and rarely go there now. A small group of people dominate the sections I'm interested in: there's far too much "this way is the one and only way to do something", there's lot of feuding and a lot of posts get deleted without rhyme or reason. Some of the feuds surfaces in public but a lot of it is PMs in a very juvenile "he said, she said, are you my side" way. I hated logging in to find PMs that read "did you know XXX said YYY about you?"

Neeps, mainly covering NE Scotland, was fairly good but is largely a women's chat room now. Okay for them, but not for me!

There are a few other smallholding/downsizing/geenshifting forums that I tried but gave up on. One was riven by feuds, another had a nasty core of racists and bigots, and yet another was dominated by a group of survivalist gun nut wannabes.

I'm also on a couple of Land Rover forums but tend to only visit when I have a particular question to ask, problem to solve.
