Old Clothes

Post: # 210120Post oldfella »

I've split this from the Rogue's Gallery as it was going somewhat off topic and that thread really should stay as mugshots - MMM.
I had a shufty around my drawers ( yep even them drawers, which reminds me," must sew some buttons on the fly of me long-johns" and I discover I have, shirts and jumpers, that I bought back in the 60s and 70s and even found a pair flares from the early 70s in the back of a cupboard, still in a box "   (as you can see we are really house proud down here") my daughter has just appeared and looked over my shoulder and reminded me that the suit I wore at her wedding in the late 90s had flares, which caused some funny looks from her friends. So it set me wondering, what is lurking in the back of your wardrobes?, and it would be interesting find the one has the oldest "whatever". There is a prize 20 Woodbines that I have just found in the pocket of those long johns.

PS, The ladies are welcome to participate, but please nothing to risque, as the old ticker is a little dicky, "oops sorry"
I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.

There's an 1880s frock coat hanging in my wardrobe.

And no, I haven't had it since new!

My lovely navy blue trench coat which I adore(d) but hadn't worn in years since I lived in London, but got it out to wear to a funeral. And discovered it had large shoulder pads!

Then there's the T-shirt I bought from River Island when it first opened - which was well before I met my husband which was nearly 20 years ago. All the seams are coming apart but I love it, still wear it and won't chuck it.

Still have quite a few clothes I still wear that I had before I met my hubby including some things that I knitted waaaaaaay back.

But no I didn't keep my old punk clothes from the 70s (or my Bay City Rollers gear  )! No point as they wouldn't fit now.

In fact a lot of what I consider to be my new clothes tend to be at least 5 years old!

Does anyone else agree that M&S knickers seem to go on for ever - goodness knows how old some of mine are  I just hope I never get hospitalised in them

I've had some of my M&S knickers for 10+ years. They don't look very glamorous so I'm hoping I never get run over.

Well don't go and buy new knickers at M&S now as they are not as good as they used to be... :( I got some this summer and one pair is already falling apart. I should take them back, but I just can't be bothered. My last M&S knickers also lasted years, the reason I went there to buy some more! Where will I go next time?!

I've got a dress that's older than I am - it was my mother's before she got pregnant with me. In my 20s I wore it as retro chic. Sadly, it is now far too small - but I'm keeping it in the hope I'll grow into it again one of these centuries! Not that I've worn a dress for the past 20 years or so.

Not the oldest thing, but one that I'm proud of:

I have a mild fabric allergy, so everything I wear has to be made of natural fibers. And in August I got a new office job, complete with dress code, so it was off to the thrift stores since the only "office attire" I had was the one I interviewed in. I started out looking for cottons, but quickly realized that the racks were practically covered with silks! I came home with 2 full bags of silk shirts and dress jackets, some with the original tags still attached, all for a song.

Out of curiosity I looked up some of the manufacturers on the tags. One silk dress jacket that I got for $7 retailed for $169, and one silk shirt that was $4, originally sold for over $500!!!!!

among my wardrobe items are
my wedding dress, and a coat that I've grown out of from 1970s
bridesmaid's dress from my sister's wedding in 1966
A pair of everlasting socks that must be 20 years old
A jacket which my Mum bought before she left London - about 1948
A couple of cotton jumpers which were bought for my 'new' job in 1985ish

oh what a fashion Icon i am
