Funky says hello from Leicester

Post: # 206988Post funky »

Hi

Have just been trawelling the web looking for pictures of Elderberry Trees. Found this site and was very impressed with the friendliness of you all and helpfulness!! I was searching the t'interweb for advice and that is how I came upon you happy band of green DIYers! I

I live in a bog standard 3 bed new development on the edge of the countryside but a couple years ago the developer was selling off a plot of land at the bottom of my garden that was once a farm track leading to the farm that the new estate was built on. No one else seemed interested so I bought it at a snip and it is only this year I've started doing anything with it. I've sold off part of the land to a couple of neighbours, (so I made my money back). The land measures about 30ft by 300ft giving me 9000sq ft for me and me and my oldest daughter to do stuff with.

The first aquisition was six chickens (more to follow) and they are an absolute joy to have and the eggs are fantastic. I'm already planning to make my own pasta, lemon curd etc with the left over eggs.

Exploring the land and what is growing on it is a real adventure for us, we have found the blackberry bush, a crab apple tree and a couple of Elderberry Trees this is what I was looking for when I found this site. I was checking to make sure they were Elderberry and not Deadly nightshade, getting them mixed up would make life interesting!! :pale: My daughters idea was to make elderberry jam (I was more hoping for Elderberry wine :drunken: ). The wildlife is great too, I'm learning loads about birds and insects, (thats mainly so I can answer my little'uns questions :study: .

The plans are to put some raised beds in over winter ready for next year, and see what else I can do that will stop me handing money over to Tescos! At some point I would like to site a couple of beeshives as well. If anyone has any ideas how to use the land then I'm all ears.

Look forward to conversing with you all, I will asking lots of dumbass questions but I'm sure you are used to that!

Hi Funky and welcome! Lucky you that nice piece of land just sort of fell in your lap and even better to get your money back. What an enterprising person you are.

As for your land I would suggest some fruit trees! Everything else you're doing sounds spot on. :thumbright:

Edit: I mean more fruit trees! You know, apple and plum and the like.

Wow that is a great piece of land you have scored yourself you lucky thing. I used to live in Leicester but I'm now in Australia, coming back next week for a holiday for first time in 8 years though, should be interesting.

We have chooks too and I love them dearly, they are such great pets.

have fun
