Hazels in pots?

Post: # 201447Post beechbaby »

Hi there everyone.
I've been thinking of growing a Hazel in a large pot - does anyone know if they produce a crop of nuts when grown this way?? Also, does anyone know if the more ornamental varieties produce a worthwhile crop of nuts?
Thanks!

I used to have a wiggly hazel in a pot which did well in it for several years but didn't fruit. When I liberated it, it quadrupled in size in no time and has nuts now, not a huge amount but I can never be sure how many because my red squirrel nabs them very quickly. But they are lots bigger than the wild ones in the garden which are barely worth bothering with, although that may well be due to the wild ones growing in very dry soil and my wiggly one being planted on top of the soakaway - which I didn't know was there at the time!

I'm not sure whether a regular bog standard hazel would be happy in a pot for very long, as after all it is a tree or shrub (whichever it is classed as) and will grow very tall if allowed to.
