Coriander Help
Coriander Help
Hello, I just can't seem to keep coriander alive. I buy it grown in the pots & it dies wherever I leave it (usually on window sills). I also tried to grow some in the garden & its just gone wirey with really thin leaves on the ends & its has now started to flower. (I assume you cut this back?) Please help!!

Re: Coriander Help
Corriander is difficult, it needs plenty of moisture, light and warmth, but not too much direct sun. It runs to seed very quickly, so you need to keep sowing it regularly to maintain a constant supply.

I've got the same problem, however since I removed it from the windowsill it works a lot better :)

Re: Coriander Help
When you say you buy it in pots - is that from the supermarket? Your best chance of getting them to last a little longer is by splitting them and repotting in a few pots. They overcrowd the seed so the plants grow tall and leggy and run to seed much more quickly because they're so stressed.
For homegrown, what Graham said
You can buy cilantro (which is coriander in Italian
) seeds - they're marketed as being bred to take longer to go to seed so you get more leaf.
But the bottom line is that coriander is an annual which flowers and runs to seed quickly because we keep pulling huge swathes of its foliage
So you need to succession plant it - every couple of weeks or so depending on how much you use.

What Graham and GA said. And plant in the ground, let some of it go to seed then you'll never need to sow coriander ever again as it will do it for you.

Is you want coriander leaf taste grow Vietnamese mint - tastes identical and hard to kill. though why anyone would want to garnish with green shield-bug taste is beyond me, still, each to their own *shrugs*
