This black softwood chip mulch is used in the front gardens and it has the appearance at a distance of black earth. It is preferred to the bright chip mulch, but the cost is high at 40 dollars per yard. It is used on a few selected beds and the contrast with some flowers is most pleasing. I do not know the method used for dying the chips, but was assured that the dye is benign.
