That White Elephant is back again

Post: # 195534Post Millymollymandy »

Is nobody going to mention the General Election in the UK, not least because the Green Party has their first MP? (Actually I was surprised and assumed they already had).

I registered for a postal vote about 3 years ago and this is the first GE I've voted in since I left England in 95, it will also be my last as it's now nearly 15 years since I left England and after 15 years I lose my right to vote. I have no right to vote in national elections in France so it was important to me to vote this time.

I generally have very little interest in politics though (mostly cos I don't understand it and they're all as bad as each other  ).

But just wondered why no-one had brought the subject up because there was much talk here about the European elections.

Maybe because it is bit of a touchy subject?

Plus we don't actually know what the results are yet... or rather what the result will be...

IMO
Nice to see the greens get a seat, great to see the BNP didn't, a pity that the liberals didn't do so well, glad labour didn't crumble but absolutely horrified that the tories might form a government.... but then, I'm a scot.... so there you go...

I kept checking in until 3am but nobody was about. Strange night - hung parliament, tories didn't do as well as they might (thank heavens), labour didn't do as badly as they might (considering how long they've been in government and recent scandals and events) and the liberals seemed to do really badly despite all the hype.

That's just my opinion - listen to any of the commentators and it's all completely different of course.

We now have to wait for all the back door shenanigans to see what happens.

We popped down to the next village to cast our votes but I know that I for one am all electioned out, it seems to have been non stop hype on the TV and radio for months. Did listen to some of it today but think even the commentators are struggling to find something new to say. Maybe we'll know more later today but suspect it will mean another election next year.

As a rule I try not to get into conversations about politics or religion hence I'm not saying who I voted for

Ditto above. Also (although I could be wrong) I think that although the BNP increased their overall share of the vote by a tiny amount, they fielded many more candidates and lost their deposit on most of them so in real terms that's... not really much of an increase. Hooray!

Y'see, I think that we don't talk politics on this forum because there are loads of other forums out there where you can argue & disagree & stick up for 'your' party & insult everyone who doesn't agree with you.... and here we are all friends, so we don't want to get into slanging matches about who is best/not best/labelled public school boys/working class, etc etc........

I'm sure that I am in a minority group where politics is concerned (although it's a majority group according to the voters  ) but my political reasons are personal to me & I vote accordingly.
Yes, my decisions are based upon the environment that I was brought up in & 30 yrs later I am STILL being the rebel of the family!
Again, 30 yrs on & my hubby would still fall at maggie thatchers feet in admiration - but to be fair, considering that he is working class, lived 20 something years in a north-east pit village, the tory years were the best he ever saw in his working life - he could never voice his political opinion in the local working men's club though!

But, each to their own & I think the Ish boards should be just like the pubs I used to run a few moons ago - no politics, no religion..... the important thing is to HAVE an opinion & a voting input... no fence sitting, except for at the allotment or by your veggie patch of course!
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden

I wasn't suggesting anybody say who they voted for as in most instances people like to keep that info private, just that we've talked about the American election and the European election so seemed a bit odd not to mention the General Election in the UK. :dontknow:

Yet my in-laws who still live in a pit village would say the complete opposite, and when I am feeling really evil  I just have to mention dear Maggie's name.......and stand back whilst ma in law goes off on one. Oh I am so naughty.

As did my hubby to his ex-father-in-law!
And he used the same club as Tony Blair before he became PM - I can't even begin to tell you what he told Tony Blair one night after a few jars... let's just say that hubby took a sabbatical from the club for a few months, & used the local pub instead!

I think the difference was that he wasn't part of the pit community & was able to buy a council house, sell it, buy a larger one & sold that, making huge profits each time. Didn't do him any good in the end, he lost it all when he moved across country & married me!

I wasn't being narky in my previous reply, I just think sometimes that on THIS forum, folks are more inclined to steer clear of highly emotive issues - which isn't a bad thing at all.
And the UK election has been/is a highly emotive issue indeed!!

I did the survey on the vote for policies website, looked at the results and voted accordingly. Well done Caroline Lucas btw, I like her, think she's a good speaker from what I've seen of her in interviews.

I come here to get away from the election. It's the only thing on the TV. There's obviously been no other news all weekend apart from the VE day celebrations and even that was used to make comments about the election. :banghead:

Personally, I think political parties should be banned. MP's should stand as independents and vote on each issue according to what is best for their constituency not just because their boss tells them what to do.
