Live on a farm

Post: # 191544Post becks77 »

Hi all,
Wasn't sure where to put this so chose the chat. Here's a link to apply for the chance to live on a farm and be part of a BBC programme/series
http://www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/beon ... farm.shtml
Hope that works

Owww it's tempting, but I don't think three kids in tow is what they would be looking for :( :(

Had already emailed that we were interested, but then learnt you had to give up everything for 6 weeks in the summer - who's going to look after the allotment?

Sounds great but need to apply in twos. Anyone up for being the other half of a pair?

We had thought about entering it, but then I got my practical head on....

What about the dogs?
What about the hens and ducks?
What about the veg patch?
What about my job?
What about paying my bills etc?

Plus, if you do win, you have no idea where the smallholding will be, and have to be happy to relocate anywhere for a year.... see above questions....

Not only do you not know where the smallholding will be that you 'win', but it is only for one year. Presumably they pay the rent for one year and then you could be off? (to make way for next year's contestants?)
Also what if the smallholding is no good for what you want to grow/raise?

Although initially it sounded like a great opportunity, the more I think about it, the more it seems like you have to make major sacrifices (and unnecessary sacrifices, they ask for people with allotments, then ask you to leave them for 6 solid weeks in summer, why not spread it out with a few days on site and a few days at home each week) but for what - I guess some help on your business plan and 1 year's free rent on a smallholding that may not be secure and may be completely unsuitable.

Also I sense the programme is going to be geared towards raising animals rather than veg. growing/market gardening.

Well it is about a farm! I think that if anyone wants a chance to really learn stuff about animal husbandry and are really serious about getting into smallholding they might just say what the heck and make arrangements for someone to look after their allotments/whatever.

But then again it's a TV show so who knows how much really good stuff they are going to learn or is it just going to be edited to show all the silly things much loved by the viewers? And it probably won't be the sort of people who already have chooks and know about growing veg who they pick as suitable candidates, for that reason. Townies make better viewing on these kind of programmes.
