Getting old - The good, the bad and the ugly

Post: # 189259Post Rosendula »

I'd like to hear your opinions of getting old(er). For me it's

The Good
  • Becoming wiser
  • Young shop assistants and waiting staff treat you with more respect when you are older than they are because they're scared of what you might do otherwise.
  • Not having to care what I look like when I walk up the street
  • Telling a shop assistant off for not asking for proof of age when I buy alcohol.
The Bad
  • That 'ggrraaarrgghh' noise you make when you try to reach something near the floor
The Ugly
  • Hairs growing in random places - I don't need a single hair in the middle of my forehead :?
  • The older I get, the goofier my teeth look.

being 25 i dont have the years of experience of some of you :thumbright:

but i can say

the good

- growing up and realising growing up isnt what you think it is and you can actually still act like a kid, have fun on climbing frames, go on twisty slides and get away with it.

- still getting asked for ID to buy alcohol :drunken: although i had no problems before i could legally buy it

- agree about not caring what i look like is great, its even better when everybody thinks your a bit mad

- telling neices and nephews that apple trees grow in your tummy if you eat a pip! ( annd whatever wild things you used to get told as a kid)

- that you really dont grow apple trees in your tummy if you eat an apple pip

- corsets work wonders :thumbright:

the bad

- that crusts dont make your hair curly ( i still eat the crusts though!)

- everybody assumes you know everything ( just because your older than them)

- the frowns for behaving like a kid and playing on the climbing frames ( usually from those 'yummy mummy' types :pale: who are to darn scared to break an nail or let junior get dirty! )

- the tv shows you watched as a kid really arnt as good as you thought they were.

the ugly

- the creaks form all manner of places on your body!

- gymnastics really should be left in the gym

- and you really dont look that great in full goth make up no matter how great it looked 8 years ago! :(

Ooooh my kind of thread!

The good

(This for those approaching 50 or more rather than approaching 40.)

You stop worrying about wrinkles and saggy bits because you are SUPPOSED to have them!

The bad

You spend 10 years worrying about those wrinkles and saggy bits as they start appearing. :(

Edit to say: forgot about Ugly, but the above covers that anyway!

The Good
Behaving as badly as you like and teling you children that you are practicing for being a batty old woman so that they won't notice when you become one!

The Bad
Not noticing that you've become a batty old woman - so you can't enjoy it!

The Ugly
Menopause! Nuf said!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Well I just realised while out shopping that I shall be 55 at the end of the month ...

The good;
being confident enough to do what you want, not what you think you should.
wearing what you want and not careing and if anyone says. If anyone says I am to old for leggings and a jumper find out about my sharpend tongue...
When you forget or make a mistake you can blame your age  you can get away with murder
being able to terrify young men by chatting them up ... I didn't realise it would be such fun.

The bad;
knees hurt
back hurts,
haveing to look after and advise younger and older family members ... no rest.
wanting to decorate but know it will take ages and you will be knackerd

The ugly
yes hair growing where it shouldn't and at a rapid rate.
Forgeting stuff...like where did I park?
feeling the cold.
living in terror of the day when I might think beige is a good colour... arrrrrgh

The good - well, I live in awe of those who say thay have reached an age where they don't care what anyone thinks...still waiting for that one! But I can look back on some of my achievements with some pride and satisfaction... and that helps to motivate me to try new things.
The bad - forgetting things, makes everyone at work laugh! I now have a terrible reputation for being vague....
The ugly - realising that my if I lost lotrs of weight now my saggy old skin would not snap back into place but hang there rather limply and loosely (good excuse not to lose weight I suppose..)

The Good:

Being able to cosy up on the sofa on Friday night and watch Gardeners' World instead of feeling that you have to be sociable.

The fact that Kylie Minogue will always be a few years older than me, and Madonna quite a few years older than me..

Tutting at 'the youth of today' (anyone under the age of 35).

The Bad:

Not knowing what to wear without looking like a granny, or looking like mutton dressed as lamb. I'm usually a jeans/t-shirt girl, with floaty skirts for when I'm feeling brave; but sometimes things like weddings throw up a bit of a dilemma. I hate shopping, and I usually end up in tears.

Grey hairs, and - yes - hairs in odd places. I have one on my chinny-chin-chin that suddenly appears but, weirdly, is about 2 inches long. I suspect someone sticks it on whilst I sleep every now and again.

The Ugly:

Knowing that I'm part of the generation that are doing their utmost to screw up the planet for our children, and knowing that I, alone, can't do much to stop it.

My face. But it was just as ugly when I was young....
I took my dog to play frisbee. She was useless. I think I need a flatter dog.

Got old,

The good,
Work when I want, Sleep when I want, eat when I want, live my life the way I want.

The Bad.
So far there's been nothing that I call bad, unless you count that shilling I lost in 1963, in Charring Cross road.

The Ugly
Just me at 6.30 in the morning, come think of it, me at anytime of the day.
So there you go, don't worry about it.
I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.

The good:

Waking up glad to be alive taking each day as it comes not worrying what others think or whether i should conform.

The bad:

Biased bureaucratic nonsense and things when wrongly driven by money.

The ugly:

Those arthiritic crackles that the glucosamine and cod liver oil doesn't always solve.

Just the good ...

In 1963, I found a shilling in Charing Cross Road.

That was nice ...
