My daughter who is at present overseas, will be returning to France in the summer of 2010, and is thinking that she would like to spend a year in England with her two daughters aged 12 and 8, and would like to know if it is possible to put the children into a school for a year, as here in France it is possible to arrange this in the local college. Her home would be available if there there is any interest in a exchange. Thanks for any info that anyone has to offer,
Oldfella
Info please.

Re: Info please.
I'm sure it's possible, in fact I think it's law that they must be in a school (if not officially home-schooled) if they're living here.

Oldfella - I've moved this out of the veg section so it'll get more views.

You should be able to, but you'll need to apply beforehand in the right time 'window' for applications. Also, I don't know how much choice you'll have if you're not living here while applying. You may have to get here and then accept what you're given by the local authority depending on where has spaces. They are legally obliged to find you a space in school if you ask for it, but as many people can attest, it's not always that simple, and you can end up travelling a long way to a school you're not happy about. Or it can work out well.
Or you could home educate your daughters for a year, there's home ed communities in most places in the UK now and it's quite common to have families travelling join in for a few months or a year. If you wanted to take that option then (currently) as the law stands there would be no need to register or inform anyone.

Re: Info please.
Thanks for the replies and info, and my daughter tell s me that her old teacher back in the UK, 21 yrs ago, has told her that although retired he can arrange for the girls to go her old school, and has even suggested that he may be able to find her accommodation with his daughter. So things are looking good if she decides to go ahead with her plans.
Thanks again, Eddy
