property for sale - maybe....

Post: # 154057Post gdb »

.. this is a bit of a strange one, and a bit long, so please bear with me...

i know that some 'ishers would love the chance to own a big house with a good chunk of land. and maybe, times being as they are, they just can't get the money together. well, i may (may!) be able to help. it depends.

i have a big house and a lot of land (nothing massive in either case, the land, for example, is 8,000m2). and i'm thinking of selling up.

now, as you will see from my profile whatsit, i'm in sweden. in the south-east corner. so there is that catch - the property is over here. but the summer's (and winters) are drier and sunnier than the uk (much much more) and you can grow most things outdoors.. it's not all reindeer and moss! and the good folk of sweden have all had the courtesy of learning english. so there are no language problems. in fact so pleasant is sweden - i should perhaps add - that i am staying, not moving on. (in fact i want to move further north. into the really harsh badlands. don't know why. just a daft desire to prove myself to myself on an ever more daft basis! if i can be self-sufficient up there, then the next stop is the moon!)

well, anyway, back to the house. it has a new wood/wood pellet boiler. a new woodburning stove. lots of other things. good roof. solid structure and so on. i've just got it connected to mains sewerage and mains water too. but it does need a good bit of refreshing (y'know, new kitchen, bathroom and whatever else you might fancy).

ok. well, the downsides.

money: i'm not in this to make money. (hey, i'm not an MP!) so i'll happily sell for, say, 40K. (yup. that is 40K for a large detached house with all that land and no neighbours and what not). but, obviously, that is the price for people who plan to work the land and try to make something better for themselves who otherwise can't. it's not a price for property speculators. i'll not sell it to such.

traffic: there is one catch. the property is on a busy road. (busy by Swedish standards, by UK standards, it's probably not that busy). the road is to be by-passed, and then it will be quiet. but when will that by-pass be? the talk is ten years. so this is not a project for the old(er) 'ishers. the plus side is that it has been ok'd to build an earth-bank between the house and the road. which should make a deal of difference.

well, phew, in a nutshell, that's that.

sorry to those of you i've bored!!! and anyone else, still interested, even a bit, do feel free to get back to me for more info.

I can back up your claim that Sweden is nice as I've been here 6 years now and still love it though lately I have been thinking it would be nice to move further south (currentley in middle Sweden) so I think you're a bit crazy wanting to move up to the "harsh badlands".

How far north do you want to go???

Good luck with the house sale anyway!

Hej Worzel!

Nice to see others in Sweden on here. How/what/why are you here? For good?

As for me, well... I'm kind of tempted to go right up above Luleå. (I know... cold, dark, mosquitoes but I've an eye on a farmhouse I've seen for sale and maybe I'll arrange gold panning trips or just pan myself a great nugget or two from some stream!! Always fancied trying that...).

But I think, on balance, I'll do something a bit more sane and go for somewhere around Sundsvall. And even that will be hard enough. :shaking:

Hej

I fancied a change and always wanted to live abroad and as the wife is Swedish Sweden was the obvious choice. I'm lucky that I got a job after 12 months so that has helped a lot but no thoughts of returning to England and with our first child due in 6 weeks I feel we are here to stay.

When we moved here we wanted a house in the countryside with a fireplace and a lake view, we got all that but I would like to have a bit more land as we only have 1500m2, which is massive compared to UK properties but I would like to expand our vegetable garden and grow more fruit and also have some livestock in the future. But all that is in the future as right now I think the little 'un might take up some time!!!

How long have you been here, gdb?

PS. still think you are crazy going up north!. I wouldn't enjoy all that darkness for 8 months of the year. I can just about handle it here in Örebro Län and going south would appeal to me but while I've got work up here I'll stay.

Hej

6 weeks to the first kiddie, eh? Now that is something! Congratulations!!! I'm 100% certain you're doing the right thing in having a family over here rather than UK-side. Apart from anything else, from what I've heard, I think Sweden has the best child-care and child/family policies in the world!

As for me, I've been out of the UK for about ten years. Never going back if I can help it. I've spent that time living between Sweden and France. I learnt Swedish many years ago as I always fancied certain things (!) about the country.... ahem....

I know what you mean about land. 1500m2 seems like a dream when you look at what you can normally expect in the UK. But when it comes down to it, you need more than that for fruit trees, space for livestock and so on.

This house has 8,000m2 and it's not really enough. Mainly because I'd want more woodland for lots of different projects.

Maybe I'll sell up. Maybe I'll buy more land. The snow up north appeals no end. But the darkness is another matter. It's not like that at this end of the country.

All the best to you and yours!

Hi again Worzel

Sorry for not replying sooner. Yes, sold.

So I've moved - and I didnt move further north as I thought I would - I've moved down to Skåne. Near Kristianstad and only 10 miles from the sea. An old mill house.

It seems a good bit milder here and should be better for growing stuff. But I miss the dark forest a bit and, so I'm told, we don't get a lot of snow. Which I will also miss.

But, overall, this is a nicer area. Mixed woodland. A lot of ancient human earthworks and the like. And a lot of wildlife. No moose, sadly, but masses of wild deer and boar. (They - the boar - come down to feed at the stream which borders my land in the evenings!)

How are things up your way?

Hi

Great news.
Further south, yes unexpected but makes more sense for growing and not too far from Öland. Have you been there yet? lovely place. Skåne, my wife's sister lives down there, Lund, I think but not sure as I've never been there on a visit!

We also started looking for a new place but no luck. We are looking for a 'Gård' and close to a lake as we already live near a lake but next year 3 summer houses will be built between our house and the lake, spoiling the view. Still looking but there aren't many new properties on the market at this time of year.

Things are good here, -18 today and snow & sunny outside. The baby is 6 months old now so I have my hands full.

Hej Worzel!

If you are looking for a gård (and wouldnt mind moving down south with us easy-livers) this place has just come up for sale down here....

http://www.hemnet.se/beskrivning/560690?r=3

It's a small gård (that's farmhouse for those looking in who don't know!) with 6,000m2 of land and it borders a river. Not far from the sea. Not far from Kristianstad either. And - not sure if this makes it more or less appealing - it would be only an hours drive from Lund and those in-laws you mention.....

Hunting: no, I don't. I have in the past but I have yet to get around to it in Sweden. I do fish - both sea and coarse/game. But I am beginning to wish I did hunt because there is plenty of game down here. Just the other day, we drove past the largest herd of deer I've ever seen. There must have been 200+. Roaming the Linderod ridge. A fantastic site.

Have you done the jägarexamen? Is it tough? I know the rules on shooting are very strict.

Could you recommend a website where I can look at properties for sale over there?

Regards
Nick

Hej Nick!

This is pretty much the only site for property in Sweden. 99% of all estate agents advertise 99% of all their properties on here.

http://www.hemnet.se

I dont think it works in English - although it claims too - so it's better to just work thru in Swedish.

If you have a look at the last link I posted it will give you an idea. That farm is only 38,000€ or around 33,000 GBP. Pretty cheap compared to the UK.... And, of course, almost everyone speaks English here. It's often a job to get someone to speak to you in Swedish!

Hi Nick

I like to use this site http://www.booli.se/kartsok so that I can search by location by moving around the map. Sweden is a beautiful country so good luck and if you want any more help or advice just ask, I'll be glad to help.

Geoff, thanks for the gård tip, it's perfect and the price is unbelievable too but unfortunatley I have a job up here and cant afford to give that up, though I'm working for Ericsson so redundancy is a real possibility soon lol!!!

I haven't done the jägarexamen yet but I've made some enquiries and hope to have it for next year. Bit pricey though and takes about 60 hours so for now I'll stick to fishing in the lake. I'm off to a 'Jul marknad' today to get my wild boar sausages.

God Jul och Gott Nytt År
