Horse racing is the worst, they still work in furlongs and guineas.
And as far as Americans are concerned the mind boggles, I'm reading a book at the moment by a US author who wrote ... quote "the twin towers on Cologne cathedral were only metres apart and soared to five hundred feet"

It's horrid wet and freezing here! My daughter flew off to the Costa Del Sol this morning - and she's texted to tell me how hot it is! Rotten wee baggage!

I can't work out if it's looking down into a puddle or up at the sky and what the shooting stars are.

its looking out to sea and those are rain, hail and snow altogether just typical weather here in the NE

Odsox..... I, as an American, agree with you. when I was a Child in school, during the 1970s, we learned Metrics and were told that the USA would soon use that everywhere in a few short years. I went to college for electronics in the early 1980s, that was all Metric. I've worked at several different factories over the years and most of them blend Metrics with old school. one of my hobbies is re-loading firearm Ammuntion, again Metrics are blended with old school measurements...And same with my Homebrew hobby.
Lastly Late model American Cars are a craptacular blend of Metric and old school.

I tend to mix up my measurements these days but my hubby understands me! I just find I can be more precise in metres and inches. It did take me a while to visualise in centimeters but I found planting bulbs helped! But I can only cook in metric.

As much as I hate to admit it, metricification in the UK did eventually make sense.
When I was employed as an engineer in the 60's & 70's, I had to deal with so many screw threads, British Standard Whitworth (BSW), British Standard Fine (BSF) British Association (BA), American Fine (AF), British Standard Pipe (BSP) as well as some really archaic ones that I forget. At least now it's just "metric" although I still have a toolbox full of (now) antique spanners.

Getting back on topic again, we had a SEVERE frost last night, had to break the ice on the chicken's water.
The overnight air temperature plummeted to +0.4c, but it's another brilliant sunny day today.

We managed to get out shopping but had to leave the car outside the gate because we can't get it back up the steep hill to the garage! Where the tyres crushed the snow (all 2cm of it!) going out had turned to solid ice on our return. It's still below zero but lovely and sunny.

Odsox - break the ice on the water - just wait until it is solid ice and you have to go and get warmer water to get the lump of ice out! For that reason we tip out most of the water bowls when they go to bed because it makes my life much easier.

My chooks have only just ventured outside, why are they so scared of snow? My newbies have just seen it for the first time and wouldn't go out, just stared at it in horror!

Well I've just been to Inverness to get the folks from the airport. There was the merest smattering of snow on the Struie (the biggest hill we go over) but the roads were all clear. Although there was a small plantation of fir trees which were covered - it looked like Christmas

And on the way back it's rained all the way!!!

I want snow! Now I don't need to go anywhere

Well it's warmed up a bit here now.

It's just -4c at the moment. (And I'm eating the last of my lettuce - grown outside right up until this morning!) But most of yesterday it was -9c and with a few degrees windchill on top of that.

Now we're forecast 24 hours without any more snow.

And then, yup, a good lot more and overnight temperatures of -11c or a bit lower.... But it sure makes the Christmas period look suitably snowy!!

No climate change? BAH HUMBUG, heres me living in the South of France and today woke up to 4 inches or 10 centimetres of Snow 6c below freezing and it made it up to plus 1c and it is now snowing again, and theres you lot living in the far north complaining ??? BAH HUMBUG I say

hello there ,

here in the North West of Germany -5 at night - 1 day temperature ,but there is 20 cm of snow.
More to come on Sunday .But we are burning away on the Esse and Stanley , wood and browncoal.
And the good thing is that as long as that bunch of pricks in Copenhagen cannot come to an agreement
we can burn away what we want .

It's hovering around 0 degrees C here. Sight of snowflakes and sleet sometimes. Trouble is that it has frozen on the town's pavements which means that walking is a bit slippery.

The house is freezing as our main sitting room was plastered last week and is still drying out - I guess the house won't warm up until it has dried out. The condensation is consequently appalling, but what can't be cured must be endured. I'm really thankful for my hot water bottle...brrr!

Oh-oh, that sounds chilly...

Perhaps you could rent out a dehumidifier, shut the doors and windows and switch it on? Get the worst of the damp out of the air before you freeze.
