Do you get called eccentric?
I'm not sure whether to take it as an insult or compliment! Is wanting to be more self sufficient and actually thinking about things eccentric?

In this day and age - probably Mrs M. But do I care - no.
Actually the Ish way of life is "normal" round here. It's the minority that don't grow some veg, many keep poultry and recycling has been a way of life for centuries (forever?).

Re: Do you get called eccentric?
I'm sure that being called eccentric would be the least offensive of the things I am called.
besides I have always valued being differnet, I think fashion is for the reality challenged who cannot think for themselves, I do things because they are important to me, my family or the planet not because others think I should.
If we are egg-centric then I say CLUCK CLUCK

Like where GA lives, most people round here in rural France live an Ish lifestyle anyway.
If anything they might think me eccentric for having hens and ducks as pets with names, who will never be eaten!

And right here deep in farming land, we're considered 'odd' because we never buy bags of compost when we are growing our own things.... and 'growing them outside too!', says the lad next door in wonder.....

I hope I do, but nobody ever says it to my face. Perhaps I'm not trying hard enough

I don't like the term tree hugger as it is always said in a really derogatory way.

Re: Do you get called eccentric?
my brother calls me a hippie and means it as an insult
but i am only insulted that he wants to insult me.. if you see what i mean... the word 'hippie' sits comfortably.

Been called a hippy since 1967 which doesn't strike me as being too bad. Least it shows I've been consistent!

Re: Do you get called eccentric?
Yes, absolutely. Not because I'm a tree--hugging hippie back-to-the-land-er, though. That is quite normal here. This is where all the original hippies came when the 1960s ended, and most of them are still here and still hip.
No, my wife and I are called eccentric because we walk. It's a 15-minute walk from our house to the village, and if the weather is not horrible and we are not in a big rush, we like to walk there. People will pass us in their trucks as we trudge up the big hill, roll down their windows, and say, "I guess you don't want a ride, eh?" They know us by now. Being considered odd in a community of eccentrics is quite an achievement, I think.
