Brillo Pads

Post: # 178478Post Silver Ether »

ok ... how green are they... I like a brillo very occasionally... usually to clean the oven then I will use same one to do the two stainless kettles, all my pans as they are all stainless, and to finish it of the hob and the sink and draining board ... I love the finish but on my pack cheap brand it says soap filled pads but doesnot tell me anything thats in them ??? so how green or not are they and don't shout at me a pack last so long I can't remember the last ones I bought...

I prefer copper scouring pads. Steel wool pads have that nasty soap in them that is probably toxic, and they eventually rust out and have to be replaced. Copper pads are generally untreated and last a long, long time. In my opinion, anything that lasts is preferable to something that needs to be replaced. Copper is also less damaging to things like Pyrex or Corningware dishes; it doesn't scratch.

If you want steel wool without the soap, you can buy it in hardware shops and probably in B&Q type shops.
It's used by woodworkers for getting a very smooth finish on furniture and also by plumbers to clean copper pipe prior to soldering.
Then you can add your own soapy stuff, but it does go rusty in next to no time if you get it wet.

Is the soap toxic though thats what I want to know... it doesn't give any indication on my pack???

To be honest the way I use them so rarely and the jobs the one does all at once ... then I dispose of it is not that wasteful and you see I dislike any form of dishcloth, scourer, washup sponge or mop intensley ... they are vile dirty things so for every day I use sponges and sponge scourers that get put in to be washed in the machine everyday.

Here's the Product Safety Data Sheet ...

http://www.pattersons.co.uk/files/pdfs/BW000143.pdf

If you're used to reading these things, you'll see it's completely innocuous. You can safely ignore the "may be" statements, which are there purely and simply as a catch-all for people who try to scour their eyes or dine on Brillo pads. They're safe as houses.

As far as I can see, the pink colour comes from an addition of jewellers rouge - a polishing agent - which is simply powdered ferric oxide (or rust, as it's more commonly called).
