Interesting thread ... I would like to try growing ginger from the shop bought stuff, so come spring and the warmer weather will definitely give it a go. Thanks for the tips!

im ganna quote myself from the other thread:
yesssssssss!!

our ginger knob is in a smallish pot.. maybe 5inch diameter, soil/compost covers it to where the sprout is, and its now about 8-9 inches tall! with 2 whole leaves, and i LOVE it, im stupidly proud of it. it lives in our greenhouse, and once it gets a bit taller, we're ganna put it into a bigger pot so the knob has room to spread =]]]] i shall go and take a photo for you m'dear
and then i shall post these pictures:

I was going to ask how it was going! I have two pots, they are in the conservatory, and doing really well! You will have to take my word for it, as I haven't mastered pictures yet! pbf.

Sorry to resurrect and old thread ;)

Ginger certainly is possible to grow decent quantities of in the UK - I've seen it at this place, in person during a visit so it's no hoax! Whilst this form of growing isn't everyone's cup of tea, it does produce some startling results. It doesn't need all that much sunshine - a warm greenhouse is a great start.

I to have grown ginger, several years ago I bought a piece of ginger from the store and left it out on the kitchen counter for a few weeks. It started to produce a few green nodules so thats when i planted it :thumbright: It is really easy to grow and it likes to be dry in-between waterings. i grow mine in large deep pots. it also likes the heat :sunny: . they make great house plants and the leaves smell like ginger if you rub them gently.

ooh this is is a great reminder. I really must plant some ginger. Here heat won't be a problem, just as long as I keep it watered.
