Is'nt it something to do with schoolkids not having to set off in dark mornings?....... thereby meaning that they have to come home in dark evenings, or was that the 1st world war?Thomzo wrote:Can somebody please remind me, is there a reason why we put the clocks back in the winter? It's to confuse farm animals, and my middle son!
Cows don't know the clocks have gone back, only that it is time for milking!
My son didn't realise his mobile phone was set to automatically change! It was just as well
I phoned him this morning or he would have been late for work! He was about to put his clock back another hour!

Nah - it's so that people with businesses could carry on their trades with less expense in terms of artificial lighting. As has been pointed out, no-one told the cows, so the farmers just had to put up with the inconvenience. But then they didn't make so much profit, and profit, as we know, is paramount. A somewhat extreme form of moulding the world to fit someone's pocket, then. Nothing changes, does it?

Isn't a more pertinent question "why do we change to summer time?", rather than why do we change back to the time we were originally on anyway, the time that always existed before some bright spark decided to muck around with our clocks and our heads?
I would hate summertime in winter as it wouldn't get light until 10am.

Re: Brits. - don't forget to put your clocks back an hour.
I totally wasted my hour.
Went out with friends and ended up staying till closing time. Then we realised they would stay open for another hour and rather than being sensible and going to bed and getting an extra of hour to sleep and recover from our outrageous drinking we decided to continue drinking for another hour. Finally left at 5.00am!!
Thats the latest I have ever stayed out drinking!

My daughter gets the bus to school at 7.15am and I, for one, am glad that it won't be pitch black for her now. It's me (and my torch!) that sees her to the road where the shuttle bus picks her up.
There are no pavements or street lights around here.

Surely you either get up and go to work in the dark or you have to come home in the dark? Either way, the benefit only lasts about two weeks, then it's dark at both ends. What's the point?
Personally, I would prefer to go to work in the dark and get back in the light. At least I could do something in the evening with the extra light, in the morning I am just getting up and going to work.

Cloud, as I said earlier in this thread, you have to change the time clock on the forum to suit your own time zone! It can't be right for those who live in UK and those in Australia at the same time can it?
You change it in User Control Panel.

This is how it is set in my control panel (to UTC/GMT and with Summer time enabled)Millymollymandy wrote:Cloud, as I said earlier in this thread, you have to change the time clock on the forum to suit your own time zone! It was 7:30pm GMT when I took the screen shot.
What am I doing wrong?

Oh! That's not what I was expecting. I thought it to do this for me. It is a computer, after all.richierobins wrote:Where it says "Summer Time / DST is in effect", click on "No".
Now back on the right time - at least here. I've still several clock to adjust at home. I actually found one set to the right time, so it has probably been an hour out since we when on to BST

Your home computer is set by you and somehow (don't ask me!) knows when the clocks change for where you live.... however this is a forum used by people from all over the world on different time zones who have DST at different times of the year - oh well maybe there is or should be some clever software which ought to be able to do it, but for the moment in phpbb forum land you have to do it yourself!

Re: Brits. - don't forget to put your clocks back an hour.
It seems my computer is set to get the time form the internet. Although, thinking about it, I do tell it where I live, which it would need to get the right timezome and DST setting. Quick Google and it seems computers 'know' about DST.Millymollymandy wrote:Your home computer is set by you and somehow (don't ask me!) knows when the clocks change for where you live.... however this is a forum used by people from all over the world on different time zones who have DST at different times of the year - oh well maybe there is or should be some clever software which ought to be able to do it, but for the moment in phpbb forum land you have to do it yourself!
I don't know why phpbb does not get local time from the user's computer, or at least offer that as setting. Maybe it's to do with security and the server perhaps can't get access to it to time stamp the messages on the bb.
I love Google
