So who manages without TV?

Post: # 168467Post Squirrel46 »

I haven't had a TV for just over a year now, it suprised me just how much more time it released into the day!
I'll admit to watching one or two things on iPlayer, but at least I don't have to pay the licence fee!
The licensing authority of course don'e believe me and have sent the usual threatening letters!
Who else is TV less?

 Me

The worrying thing is that when I go over to the in laws (who occasionally have on 'wallpaper TV' ie, doesn't get switched off when they have visitors   ) I sit and ogle at it... it is dull and crap but I can't take my eyes off of the flashing images and attention grabbing presenters... and that is on Antiques road show

We are thinking about getting a TV again as I am finding that BBC childrens programmes are invaluable and flippin' fantastic, and with LO being home educated it will be a valuable resource. I wonder if we can get one that only shows CBeebies though :flower:

I miss Wimbeldon and the 6 nations and olympics... but for someone who isn't that into sports it is really rather odd that they are the only programmes that I miss.

Me too. I hadn't had a TV for 5 years before moving here and I only ever missed the sport. It did mean that I could never join in the discussion at morning tea time as it was always about the latest show!

When we moved we got offered 3 months free cable so we took it but we got it cancelled when the time was up as it is rubbish. I have plenty of other things to do with my time so I don't miss it. We still have the actual TV so we can use it to watch dvds which we can get for free from the local library if we want to.

I find that if I have TV I will watch it (including the rubbish stuff!) instead of doing other stuff but if I don't have one then I really don't miss it.

We have the equipment, but there is no reception here. There is one channel that we can almost receive, with really bad static, with the aid of an amplified antenna, but it is one that we wouldn't watch anyway. There is no cable TV, and we don't feel like getting satellite TV. So, we just use it to play rented videos.

We don't miss TV one bit. Any time we stay at a hotel or B&B that has a TV, we watch it, and are amazed at the crap that people watch. We get all the news and information we need from the Internet or from radio. We use the extra time in the evenings to read.

I love telly and tonight SCD starts again and tomorrow is X Factor. Brilliant!

Even if you don't like this sort of thing there's so much cooking (these days features a lot of foraging and allotments, it's not Delia in a studio any more), agriculture, gardening, history, geography, wildlife etc etc stuff on that is educational, informative and entertaining I don't know how so many of you can poo-poo programmes like that. But then maybe you've never seen them! I think the quality of TV programmes on at the moment is excellent.

No tv for me. If we want to catch up with a specific programme usually it can be found on iplayer, 4OD etc. I have friends who moan about drivel tv (chewing gum for the mind) and also about escalating electricity costs but remarkably seem unable to connect the two and locate the off button.
Each to their own I suppose

sorry, but sometimes there is a thin line between parenthood and insanity and cbeebies and citv is the perfect cure for that.

that said soph's been more into watching dvds this week, and wallace and grommit on my ipod.... i think we've only had cbeebies on for an hour this whole week!!!

also, i like my tv in the evenings. I have Zattoo on my main PC, and love love love iplayer, 4od and 5 on demand. i also have a little piece of software which tells bbc iplayer that my pc is an iphone and i'd like to watch some of their lovely programming so please could i have it in Quicktime format?! sometimes stuff doesn't download properly, i think they have bloked some of their more lucrative programmes from having quicktime formats, but for the most part i have got some good stuff for use on my ipod. including 3/4 gigabyte of Charlie and Lola.

btw if finding problems using 5 on demand, get firefox and install an adblocker. even if you only use it on that website (as i do cos lets face it, the internet is funded on adverts).
oh how I love my tea, tea in the afternoon. I can't do without it, and I think I'll have another cup very
ve-he-he-he-heryyyyyyy soooooooooooon!!!!

we do have a TV - it is an excellent resource when it comes to home ed. , though sadly the BBC seem to be doing less and less home ed programs -but we watch the items on drugs etc that channel 4 does in the mornings. otherwise we watch educational DVDs etc. or recorded programs such as coast, or things from discovery or the history channel.

*everything* that we watch, we record first,, apart from the news, we don't watch anything live. So we definitely choose what we watch - never wallpaper, and when we weatch it. during the summer when the daylight allows us to spend our time outside, we rarely go into the living room, so entire series back up to be watched over the winter months. Hence I'm usually the last to comment on a program!
We have our tv hooked up to a computer so can watch iplayer via that. I must be one of the few making full use of iplayer and paying my licence too.! I'm not sure that we are that different from those that dont have a TV but watch their computer instead.

how many don't have a tv and dont watch programs on iplayer either?

i love the use of the term wallpaper tv, it really annoys me when i visit friends and they have one of these massive tellies constantly on a music channel. its true that even though it is complete crap you cant help but feel your eyes wander back to it, its spooky! watch so little tv at home, mainly for films and desperate housewives (blushes)!

Desperate Housewives is brilliant and even my husband is into it now, in fact I was quite amazed to find how many husbands are addicted to it (but that's probably due to all the gorgeous women and Edie and Gabby dressed in not very much  ).

I also can't watch any TV programme on the internet as I am not in the UK!

I've not had a TV all my adult life. Actually, that's not quite true - the community house I'm in now does have one in the lounge downstairs but the only thing I've watched on it since moving in at the start of the month was an episode of Miss Marple and that was on older programme played a few days after broadcast via the Virgin media box (essentially a free extra on top of broadband and phone line).

I do spend a lot of time on the computer though (although this is two-way communication or as a creative tool, not just as a goggle-box).

I have no TV! Well, that's not quite true, we have a TV, but it doesn't receive anything, and even if it did, it would all be in Chinese...

I do have lots of documentaries and stuff downloaded. I'd love to be able to watch some british documentaries online, but most of the places require you to have a british IP address...anyone got any advice for how to get some decent documentaries?

I am a telly addict (Sad to admit, but true) T.V is my defult acticity. It goes on when I get in from work and stays on till I go to bed. We watch whatever is on, sometimes good, usually bad. I would love to be without it, but like a true drug addicts just cant do it. Hubby wouldnt be too happy either.
I read a book called "Remotely controled" basically about how horrible TV is for your physical and mental health, and how bad it is for children, it was quite shocking, and I did go for a long time without watching it (much) after that, but slowly slipped back to my old ways.
Having said that I cant watch music channels because I find the flashing and constantly changing images too much, it is hypnotising and I just cant watch it.
I just keep imagining how much more I would get done if I didnt have it on, but just cant bring myself to switch off :(
