I think the format would be one of the the tricky parts, but that would form with time (I hope)

I am also thinking that info on one veg, herb, fruit would also be a good idea. Then perhaps for timings we could break it up into zones like this...

I am thinking that perhaps we could have this as an extra to the page, so the page is about beetroot with most of the info on it then one page with titles down it for Europe zone 1,2,3, Australia zones 1,2,3 etc. And of course container growing.

With all the emails I get from people asking for link exchanges for similar sites I think that the knowledge is out there and could do with a place for it.

The software is out there too, I have searched around a bit and think that I have found something for the job, it is called wikka

Right I have put up a test site out magazine's dormant website. Have a look http://sproutmag.org/Wikka/HomePage - it can have the strict controls that will deter spammers, by manualy typing in who has permissions for write access. I think that these methods are perhaps best left at first and should only be bought in if we need to.

So a useful tool?

Very strange I have just tested it in explorer, opera, safari and Firefox, it seems to work fine in those and Stew(muddypause) has managed to post. Are you simply getting nothing or is it just that you can't log on? I have changed the permissions so that anyone can post for now.

Yep, it's working fine from here.

Andy, just for the sake of a bit more experimentation - how do I create a new page? Maybe there should be a brief page on the wikisite about how to use it.

Just added a bit on that main page about creating a new page and an article about beetroot to have a play about with if you wish.

I think that this could be a goer. Shall try it out and see what comes of it. Of course I have resevations, mainly keeping spammers at bay, it not becoming much of a resource and how much more of my time could be spent hunched in front of this computer rather than out on the allotment. But still it could be well worth it in the end if it does work.

I still seem to need to log in before I am allowed editing rights.

What about initially giving it the same access rights as this forum? Anyone can read it, but if you want to edit or add to it, you have to be registered at this forum. Is it possible to link the two like that?

Not a bad idea stew, although I do think that it will be pretty difficult to set up, linking between the two. Especially as it seems that you have to WikiYourname, but I am sure they is a mod out there that I can install to do just that. The other thing is that spammers use this forum, it might not be wise at the moment to give imediate access to the wiki site also.

It could be best as a site that has a file in it to stop it being referenced by googlebots etc for now too and send out a load of emails to people who might be interested, sort of an invitation only site. That could stop the spammers getting wind of it and still attract a variety of users?

I think this is a really good idea (now that I have my head round how it might work). But there would definitely have to be some controls. I like the idea of a kind of writers' co-operative, with everybody adding to and developing somebody else's thoughts.

I have to agree here.

Just catching this thread now.
On the topic of wikipedia... there's nothing more annoying than finding students using this as their primary/sole resource! Many people seem unaware of the nature of wikipedia.

I do like the idea of a wikki site for plant growing info (although something for self-sufficientish living would also be good), and call me elitist, but I think that it would work best with moderators that first have to approve members who can post. New members would have to demonstrate that they have something to contribute and know what they're talking about.
OTOH, that would leave out persons say from specific locations who just wanted to add a brief paragraph about growing X in their climate/region that is not represented on the wiki site.

OMG, I went to try it and I am TOTALLY lost. I thought I was relatively skilled in the basics of website creation...

It takes some getting used to. Although I haven't used this system before, it's fairly easy for me... but I do use a personal wiki every day at work to keep a diary of all the projects I've been working on.

How far did you get before you got stuck?

Wulf
