I have just made around 6l of passata with some Tomatoes that I bought for £2.50 in the local indian sop.
A few weeks ago I bought a passata machine, with the intention of making some of my ow passata when we get a glut of tomatoes.
So when I saw a large box for £2.50 I jumped at the chance to use my new machine :-)
Well, I thought I had enough jars!! But I don;t!
So I was wondering if I could bottle it in wine bottles and cork it.
What so you think?
Of course I would have to thoroughly sterilize the bottles first and cool the passata, but do you think it would work?
Passata in wine bottles??
Re: Passata in wine bottles??
Thank you!
Would have to let it cool though before I cork it?

Re: Passata in wine bottles??
I'd be careful with wine bottles, since they are not really designed to withstand hot liquids. They might break. Narrow necks for filling as well.
Also corks are, well, "breathing" a bit and that's something nice with wines, but not with passata. You really want an absolute airtight seal with canned goods. So I'd be very careful and keep them in the fridge.
I'd close any vessels before they are cooled. The hotter the better.
Personally I use old jam jars for canned tomatoes of any thickness. That allows you to check the vacuum too.
Happy canning (and later eating!),

Thank you all!
In the end I rummaged through the recyclng box and found enough jars!! (Why didn't I think of that in the first place!) Almost enough jars, I was 1 litre short, but half of that has been used making garlic and clove quorn chicken curry and bombay potatoes for dinner! And the remainder is in the fridge, I will use it tomorrow!
I get through a lot of passata, about 12 (700ml) jars a month! so it won't last long!
